Badgers win in Top of The Mountain Bowl

SANDY, UT - On the legs of Snow College freshman running back Breon Allen, Snow College defeated Eastern Arizona in the Eighth Annual Top of the Mountains Bowl 36-9 at Rio Tinto Stadium Saturday.
In what was a rematch of an earlier season game where Eastern Arizona defeated Snow41-14, it was the Badgers on the right end of the blowout this time.
“We knew what happened last game and we knew we had to be prepared,” said Snow head Coach Tyler Hughes. “Eastern is a heck of a football team and we knew we had to play better than last time.”
Allen rushed for 134 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries, helping Snow out rush the No. 1 ground attack in the nation. Alimoti Vaenuku added 76 yards and atouchdown on five carries.
Both teams entered the game 8-3 on the season and played each other earlier in the season. In that earlier meeting Easter Arizona beat Snow 41-14.
The Badger defense forced five fumbles in the first half to give the offense great field position.
"They played so big, they played with a chip on their shoulders right from the get go,” said Allen.
Kicker Jon Hess put the Badgers on the board first with a 32-yard field goal in the first quarter. After an Eastern Arizona fumble, Snow quarterback Craig Harrison led the Badgers down the field and connected with Ronrei Lloyd for a 6-yardtouchdown pass.
Eastern Arizona offense was led in the first half by a triple option attack featuring Devin Mohn who had 69 yards and one touchdown rushing by halftime, and finished the game with 110 yards on the ground
Penalties were another issue for Eastern Arizona in the first half as they committed 11 for 105 yards.
Snow's offense line was dominate up front allowing Harrison plenty of time to throw and making holes for running backs Vaenuku and Allen. In the first half Allen and Vaenuku both had big touchdown runs to push the Badger lead to 22-6
Eastern Arizona came back and put a drive together at the end of the half that led to a Brandon Porter 38-yard field goal.
The Badgers opened the second half with a fumble recovery that started a drive that was engineered by a 22-yard run by Vaenuku which set up a one-yard touchdown run by Allen.
The following Eastern Arizona drive was halted by an interception by Badger safety Clayton Christensen.
The defense of Snow College completed a shutout in the second half.
"This is our opportunity to play on a big stage today and we felt like we showed up" said John Mahe, Snow's defensive player of the game.
Allen continued to rack up rushing yards on a defense that coming into the only allowing teams 83 yards rushing per game. Allen had a 72-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to seal the victory for the Badgers.
Eastern Arizona finished the game with 257 yards total offense with 181 rushing yards despite giving up four turnovers and 15 tackles for loss.
Snow College Head Coach Tyler Hughes finishes his first season 9-3 with the win Saturday. This was the Badgers sixth Top of the Mountains Bowl victory in the game's eight-year history.
