YUMA, Ariz. – Snow College completed an undefeated run through the Western States Football League (10-1, 8-0) with a strong 40 – 26 win over the Arizona Western Matadors in a game played Saturday night in Yuma, Ariz.
Sophomore quarterback #Christian Stewart# finished with 191 yards passing and three touchdowns completing 12 of his 22 passes. He also ran for a 5-yard touchdown. Stewart had scoring strikes of 20 yards to #Breon Allen#, #Lowry Akers# for 15 yards and #Evan Moeai# for 10 yards, all in the first half. Snow led 33-12 at the break.
“I couldn't be more proud of my teammates! I've never been a part of a team that is so unified and so complete. There isn't a weak spot all across the board and that's what has made us such a unique and special group. No one person can take credit because we did it as a team and that is the way it's supposed to be done," said Stewart, who has been a stand-out for the Badgers all season long.
Allen finished with a hard fought 120 yards on the ground on 28 carries and had Snow's only score of the second half from two yards out with under two minutes left in the third quarter. Snow recorded its eighth safety of the season when Matador punter Tilghman Harvey stepped on the endline to make the score 9 -0 for Snow near the end of the opening period.
Allen, who is the nation's leading rusher, added to his record-breaking season int he victory, but was quick to point out his teammates in the victory. “I am excited and beyond grateful. I really don't have words to describe how happy I am and how proud of my team I am,” said Allen following the game.
Matador quarterback Tanner McEvoy was tough for the Badger defense to contain as he rushed for 119 yards on 19 carries and scored three touchdowns. McEvoy threw for Arizona Western's other score, hitting Markeith Ambles from 29 yards out for the last score of the game four minutes into the final period.
Despite McEvoy's success, the Badger defense and special teams forced three criticial turnovers in the first half which provided 17 total pouints for Snow. "Those turnovers were critical. They turned the game after our defense had kept the game tight early on after our own turnovers," said Badger Head Coach, Tyler Hughes.
"Our players and coaches have been outstanding. They committed to the effort it takes to become a champion and they will be the 2012 champions forever," added Hughes.
Snow College completed an incredible regular season while winning the WSFL title outright for the first time since the 2008 season and they will be looking for a bowl invite after deciding earlier this year not to host the Top of the Mountains Bowl game after holding the event for eight years in Salt Lake City. The school has been in discussions with many of the top bowl games in the NJCAA.
