Box Score MILLEDGEVILLE, Geo.—In the latest episode in a series that has not been kind to the visiting team, Georgia Military College rallied for a 47 – 30 come from behind win over the eighth-ranked Snow College Badgers Saturday afternoon.
Snow led 23 – 7 midway through the second period, with several chances to add to their lead, but the Bulldogs of Georgia Military seized the momentum, scoring twice to cut the Badger halftime lead to 23 – 20. The Bulldogs, ranked number 18 in the nation, outscored the Badgers 27 – 7 in the second half to earn the win.
Snow lost its starting running back #
Breon Allen#, who was averaging 142 yards per game, midway through the second period to injury and he did not return. Allen was on pace to reach his average, leaving with 86 yards on 13 carries, including the Badger's first score on a 33-yard scamper that tied the game at the 7:10 mark of the first period.
A pair of #
Christian Stewart# to #
Lowry Akers# touchdown passes, late in the first quarter from 24 yards and then early in the second quarter from 25 yards, helped put Snow ahead by 16. Akers finished with five receptions for 100 yards and two scores, while fellow Badger wide receiver #
Casey Glines# six passes for 82 yards.
Georgia Military's Mario Alford started the scoring with a 77-yard touchdown strike from Clay Chastain on the Bulldog's second play from scrimmage. Alford was a true double-threat for the Bulldogs, rushing for 132 yards and two touchdowns and catching four passes for 129 yards and another pair of touchdowns. He had game-high honors in both rushing and receiving yards.
The Badgers looked like they were going to again take control after the break, scoring on special teams when #
Thomas Bryson# blocked a Bulldog punt and cornerback #
Ronald Tyler# pounced on it in the end zone to extend Snow's lead to 30 – 20. But the Bulldogs went on a roll, scoring the last four touchdowns of the game. Phillip Moore punched it in from one yard out with 14:30 left in the game to give the Bulldogs a 33 – 30 lead, their first since midway through the first quarter.
That opened the floodgates as Georgia Military scored twice more in the fourth period to make the final 47 – 30.
The schools have played each other each of the last four years with the home team winning every time. Whether it was the heat and humidity of the Georgia summer, or the thin air at Snow College's home in Ephraim, Utah (at 5,600 feet above sea level), the series has been dominated by the home team pulling away in the second half.
Allen was injured blocking on a pass play inside the red zone with Snow already leading 23 – 7; the pass fell incomplete and Snow missed a 27-yard field goal attempt as the momentum swung sharply to the Bulldogs.
“They were able to generate a couple big plays, and instead of 30 – 7 it was 23 – 13 just that quick,” said Snow head coach #Tyler Hughes#. “That's where the momentum began to swing.”
On their next possession Snow had a chance to tie the score, but
Spencer Groner's 37-yard field goal attempt clanked off the upright to give the ball back to Georgia Military with 3:26 left in the first half. Groner, who was perfect on the season coming into the game, just missed from 38, 27 and 37 yards, all in the first half. Georgia Military made the most of the opportunity, scoring on an 8-yard pass from Chastain to #Montez McGuire# with a minute left to cut the Badger lead to 23 – 20 at halftime.
Snow killed comeback attempts of its own in the second half with three interceptions and a fumble. “I told the coaches that turnovers would be a big factor in the second half,” Hughes said. “We have to take care of the ball better. That was definitely part of the unraveling.” Snow finished the game with 440 yards of total offense to 413 for the Bulldogs.
Snow next hosts Glendale on Saturday at noon while Georgia Military travels for the first time this season, going to Franklin, Mass., to take on Dean College.
