PUEBLO, Colo.—Snow College scored more than 60 points in consecutive weeks picking up its second win by beating North Dakota State College of Science (NDSCS) in Pueblo, Colo. Snow, ranked ninth nationally, crushed the Wildcats 63 – 17, after opening its season at home last week with a 66 – 0 drubbing of Everett (Washington).
The game was the finale of the three-game Mile High Shootout pitting teams from the Western States Football League against teams from the Midwest Football League. All three contests featured a Top-10 team taking on an unranked opponent resulting in a trio of blowouts. Third-ranked Arizona Western defeated Ellsworth 49 – 14 in the opener, followed by Iowa Western (ranked eighth in the nation) crushing New Mexico Military 83 – 22. In the nightcap Snow ran to a 49 – 3 halftime lead before coasting to the 63 – 17 win.
The Badgers were stopped only by the clock in the first half, scoring on each of their first six possessions while throwing in a defensive touchdown to lead 49 – 3 at the break. Snow ran out the last two minutes of the half after receiving NDS's third punt of the game at its own 21.
Breon Allen, from Daytona Beach, Fla., was over 100 yards for the second straight time, picking up 142 yards and two touchdowns in the first half. He played only the first series of the third quarter ending up with 170 yards in the game on 22 carries.
“He (Allen) does many things in the running game that are difficult for defenses to handle,” said Snow's second-year head coach Tyler Hughes.
Following a slow start in the opener against Everett last week, quarterback
Christian Stewart (Timpanogos HS) completed six of 13 passes for 126 yards and three touchdowns before halftime and then spent most of the second half watching from the sidelines.
Hughes was also pleased with Stewart's performance saying, “Christian did a real nice job tonight. I was happy with the way he managed everything.”
Snow scored on runs by Allen and Stewart then went up 21 – 0 only 10 minutes into the contest when Stewart hit
Damond Powell on a 37-yard strike immediately following an interception by
Will Bostic. Stewart and Powell teamed up again on an 18-yard TD pass on the first play of the second period. Stewart also hit
Lowry Akers (Manti HS) in the second quarter on a 35-yard scoring pass.
The Snow defense, which has been impressive in its first two outings, scored on a 35-yard interception return by
Brian Cobbs in the second quarter, and scored again on the Wildcats' first possession of the final period when
Tre Hansen (Sky View HS) recovered a fumble in the end zone.
Both teams scored 14 points in a sloppy fourth quarter highlighted by a flurry of penalties as both coaches substituted freely.
This was the season opener for NDSCS which was founded in 1903 in Wahpeton, N.D., and began playing football in 1909. Snow College will travel to Milledgeville, GA., next week to take on Georgia Military.
