Second ranked Badgers fall, 35 - 17, to Georgia Military

Box Score
EPHRAIM, Utah-Georgia Military was the first team to break serve in a football series the Bulldogs have played with the Snow College Badgers since 2009. The Bulldogs earned their second impressive win of this young season by beating second ranked Snow College 35-17 at Badger Stadium on Saturday.
Powered by running back Jovon Robinson's 313 yards and two touchdowns, the Bulldogs amassed 389 yards on the ground against a usually stingy Snow College defense. Robinson scored on a 57-yard scamper midway through the second quarter to give Georgia Military its first lead at 14-7, and later put the final nail in the coffin as he scored from 26 yards out with under two minutes left in the game.
The teams had played each other in each of the past four years with the home team winning each time. Georgia Military now has back-to-back wins over the Badgers, handing Snow its only loss in 2012 when the teams played in Georgia. The Badgers finished 11-1 last year and ranked third in the nation.
Snow scored on its first possession on a nine-yard crossing route from quarterback Crosby Jensen to tight end Landon Horne with 6:19 to go in the first quarter. But a 30-yard Spencer Groner field goal as the first half ended was the only other score the Badgers could muster before a touchdown brought them back to within 11 points three minutes into the final period.
Jensen finished with 261 yards on 24-of-38 passing, but was picked off three times, each one halting a Badger drive which had moved the ball into Bulldog territory. Jensen was knocked out of the game on a busted play early in the fourth quarter and Ryan Rosenvall completed nine of 12 passes for 96 yards in relief.
Snow outgained the Bulldogs, 514 to 509 yards in total offense, but hurt themselves with the three interceptions and a lost fumble which squandered scoring opportunities. Georgia Military, meanwhile, made the most of big plays adding a 63-yard touchdown pass from Pat Thomas to Ty Smith in the third quarter to go along with Robinson's long touchdown runs in the second and fourth periods. Thomas and Smith had teamed up earlier in the third quarter on a three-yard scoring pass.
The Badgers had 10 more first downs than the Bulldogs, 35 to 25, and were much better on third down attempts, converting 10 of 16 attempts to only 4 of 13 for the Bulldogs. But Georgia Military scoring plays of 63, 57 and 26 yards were each longer than the Badgers' longest play of the game, a 25-yard pass from Jensen to David Halterman early in the second quarter which was followed three plays later by Georgia Military's first interception. Snow ran 88 offensive plays to Georgia Military's 67, as the Badgers tried to grind out long, sustained drives while the Bulldogs struck quickly from long range.
Freshman Marcus Dixon led the Snow ground game picking up 120 yards on the ground on 24 carries and scoring for the Badgers from six yards out early in the final quarter. Dixon graduated from Warner Christian High School in Daytona Beach, Fla., the same school which produced Breon Allen who last year became the first Badger ever to lead the nation in rushing.
Tight ends carried the load for the Badger passing game with Tyler Barron pulling in nine passes for 89 yards and Horne grabbing eight for 88 yards. Wide receiver Davonte Maez also had eight receptions for 64 yards. Barron, a 6'4" target from Port Orange, Fla., also graduated from Warner Christensen as did Dixon.
Snow takes its 1-1 record (1-0 in the Western States Football League) on the road this week as they travel to Scottsdale to resume league play. Scottsdale lost its opening game at Eastern Arizona, but rebounded nicely with an impressive 45-23 home win this week over Arizona Western. Georgia Military, an independent team which is now 2-0, plays its home opener on Saturday hosting Atlanta Sports Academy. Georgia Military beat Blinn College 37-21 in the first week of the season.
