SALT LAKE CITY – (October 26, 2019) – The No. 5 Snow College women's volleyball team secured at least a share of the Scenic West Conference title with a 3-0 victory at No. 15 Salt Lake C.C. on Saturday. In the process, the Badgers registered their 28th win of the season, marking the most wins in a single season in school history during the rally scoring era. The previous record was set last season when the Badgers earned 27 victories.
"Today's match was really impressive to witness," Snow College head coach Jeff Reynolds. "We knew it would not be an easy match against the Bruins. Having played them a couple weeks ago, we knew what they were capable of. I'm just really proud of this team and couldn't be more pleased with how they played today."
Snow jumped out early in the first set and came away with the 25-12 victory. In the second set, the two teams traded points until the Badgers pulled away to take the 25-17 win. In the third and final set, Snow cruised to a 25-19 win to keep its perfect league record intact at 8-0.
Offensively, freshman Korrin Thornock led the Badgers with a match-high 11 kills on 25 swings to hit .400 for the match. Freshman Lydia Montague hit .412 for the match, connecting for eight kills on 17 swings with just one attack error. Sophomore Andreanna McKee also had eight kills, connecting on 8-of-18 attempts with just one error. Sophomore Sarah Morley chipped in six kills while sophomore Bridget Triplett was credited with four kills on nine attempts to hit .444 for the match. Freshman setter Ellee Anderson was credited with a match-high 27 assists.
All totaled, the Badgers connected on 41 of 99 attempts to hit an impressive .374 for the match. The team committed just four hitting errors during the match.
Defensively the Badgers out-blocked one of the top blocking teams in the nation, 8.0-1.0. The Bruins entered the match ranked No. 2 in the nation in block assists; however, the Badgers did an effective job of moving the ball to score around the SLCC block. Montague led Snow with four blocks, followed by Thornock who added three blocks for the Badgers. Sophomore libero Savannah Tanner led the team with a match-high 14 digs, followed by Morley who added 12 digs. Thornock and fellow freshman Jentry Ison each had seven digs.
The Badger defense held Salt Lake to 39 kills on 123 attempts and forced 20 hitting errors. The Bruins hit .154 for the match, including a match-low .026 in the first set.
"While our goals for the match focused on a couple different offensive components, it was our defense that really played a nice game and gave our offense momentum," Reynolds said.
Needing to win one of their final two regular-season games in order to win the outright conference title for the first time since 1986, the Badgers will take on No. 12 Utah State Eastern on Thursday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m., followed by Colorado Northwestern on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 1 p.m.
