Suguturaga's Game Winner Lifts Badgers Past Mustangs

The Snow College women's basketball team split a pair of matches at the Vista Auto Thanksgiving Classic.  The Badgers lost to No. 18 Casper College 64-55 before Samiana Suguturaga scored the go-ahead basket with 12 seconds remaining in a 68-67 overtime victory over Western Wyoming Community College.

Friday's matchup with the Thunderbirds served as a rematch after the two teams squared off Nov. 5.  The Badgers lost that game 79-64, and while they gave the Thunderbirds all they could handle in Friday's game, they would suffer an 11-point loss.

The Badgers came firing out of the gate in the first quarter and outscored Casper 19-8.  The offense slowed down considerably in the second quarter as Snow College was outscored by 12 and was down 27-26 at the halftime break.

The Badgers charged right back and took a 38-33 lead midway through the third quarter.  The Thunderbirds quickly turned things around and went on a 16-3 run and would take a 52-45 lead into the fourth quarter.

Snow College would claw its way back and come within four points, but the deficit was too much to overcome as the comeback bid would come up short and the Badgers would suffer a 64-55 defeat.

Enid Vaifanua led all scorers with 23 points on 7-10 shooting, 3-4 from deep, and 6-9 from the free throw line.  She also added five rebounds in the win.  Grayce Glover finished with seven points, five rebounds, and three assists.

The Badgers turned around to face WWCC Saturday and played in its first overtime game of the season.  Snow College eked out a slim 68-67 victory.

Snow College got out to a very slow start as it scored just six points in the first quarter and trailed by 15 points after the first 10 minutes.  The Badgers were able to cut into the deficit and went into the halftime break trailing 28-20.

A 23-point third quarter gave the Badgers a three-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.  The Badgers would hold the lead throughout the fourth quarter until the Mustangs tied the score at 55 apiece with 2:15 remaining.  The 55-55 score would remain the same over the final minutes forcing overtime.

Snow College would open up a 64-60 lead with under two minutes to go in overtime.  The Mustangs would not go away, however, and would go on a 7-0 run in under a minute to take a 67-64 lead with 60 seconds remaining.

Jessica Lange got a crucial offensive rebound and putback to get the Badgers within one.  Snow College forced a turnover on a shot clock violation to get the ball back with 20 seconds left.  The Badgers gave the ball to Suguturaga who isolated near the right wing.  She drove her defender baseline and executed a perfect up and under and laid the ball in with the left hand to give Snow College a 68-67 lead with 12 seconds to go.  The Badger's defense would hold strong on the other end and the Mustang's final shot would go begging and Snow College claimed the one-point win.

Lange led four Badgers in double figures with 13 points and eight rebounds.  Suguturaga finished with a double-double scoring 12 points and grabbing a career-high 14 rebounds.  Glover also finished with 12 points while Vaifanua had 11 points, four rebounds, and five assists in the win.

Having wrapped up non-conference play, the Badgers will now begin their Scenic West Athletic Conference schedule with a pair of matches against the College of Southern Nevada Dec. 2 and 3 in Las Vegas.  Friday's matchup with begin at 6:00 p.m. MST with Saturday's game set to tip off at 2:00 p.m. inside the Coyote Center.  For video streaming and live stat information, visit snowbadgers.com.
