The Snow College women's basketball team headed to Taylorsville to take on the Salt Lake Community College Bruins Thursday night. The Badgers were led by forward Samiana Suguturaga who finished with 27 points shooting 10-15 from the field.
The 8-10 Badgers came into Thursday's matchup following a heartbreaking loss at home against the College of Southern Nevada. Needless to say they were determined to get back on track, and that's exactly what they would go on to do against the 15-5 Bruins.
The Badger's starting five came out with high energy and started the first quarter strong. It was clear they were not letting the Bruins have anything easy. They led by as much as six points with under two minutes left in the first quarter. However, the Bruins continued to persevere, and ended the quarter on a 6-0 run to tie the game at 17.
SLCC returned from the quarter break ready to perform. They outscored the visiting Badgers 18-14 in the second quarter led by Zaliah Adams. In the second quarter alone Adams scored 12 points on 5-5 shooting with two made free-throws. The Badgers were persistent and continued to hang close to the Bruins, finishing the half only four points behind.
With the start of the second half, a new energy filled the arena as the Badgers would come out eager to compete. Snow College's Suguturaga and Enid Vaifanua combined for 15 points in the
third quarter on 6-10 shooting. Vaifanua also went 2-3 from 3-point range. SLCC struggled to begin the third quarter, shooting just 3-14 from the field. This Badger's third quarter performance would secure momentum and help rally them to victory.
The newfound momentum from Snow College would carry into the fourth quarter. The Badgers continued to shine and outscored the Bruins 16-12, leading them to a 68-60 win on the road. The Badger's Reagan Yamauchi finished with eight points in 10 minutes of play aiding in the Badger's win.
The Badgers were led offensively by Suguturaga, who scored at least five points in every quarter of the game. She was aided by Vaifanua, who finished the game with 14 points and Yamauchi who finished with 11 points. Suguturaga, Vaifanua and Yamauchi would each finish the game with nine rebounds.
The Badgers will continue their road-stretch and visit Utah State University Eastern Thursday, Jan. 26 at 5:00 p.m. followed by a matchup with Colorado Northwestern Community College Saturday, Jan. 28. For video streaming and live stat information, visit snowbadgers.com.
