Badgers Softball Takes Four of Six Games at Western Shootout

The Snow College softball team traveled to Yuma, Arizona last weekend to participate in the Western Shootout.  The Badgers won four of their six games including victories over Arizona Western College 8-0, Pima Community College 6-5, Central Arizona College 6-4, and No. 19 Eastern Arizona College 9-4.

The Badgers came into this weekend after winning four of five games at the CSN Kickoff Classic the week prior. During that time, Snow College picked up victories over  Glendale Community College 8-4, CAC 9-4, 4-1, and EAC 19-8. The Badgers would then go on to play all of the same teams in the Western Shootout as they did in the CSN Kickoff Classic, save GCC.

The Badgers started the weekend by facing AWC for the second time this season. Snow College pitcher August Cowan would excel in this game as she would finish the game with three strikeouts.

The Badgers had a dominant third inning in which they scored three runs. They continued to have success hitting the ball which aided them in scoring two runs in the fourth and fifth inning. Snow College would go on to win 8-0 as the team finished with a total of 11 hits.

The Badgers would then turn their attention to the PCC Aztecs.  Thursday's game would be tightly contested as the two teams battled to take control. As the first inning came to a close, the Badgers trailed 3-2.

Snow College had a powerful third inning in which it scored three runs. Although the Aztecs would go on to score two more runs, it would not be enough to push past the Badgers. The final score was 6-5 as Snow College took its second victory of the day.

Badger star Bailey Bowers would be the hero of the day as she finished Thursday's games going 4-4 with two doubles and two home runs. She was aided by Hadlee Walker and Tasia Shibuya who would each add home runs to Thursday's games.

Snow College would begin Friday's games by facing off against AWC again, however, in this matchup, we would see a very different Matadors team. AWC came out hot and scored six runs in the first inning while the Badgers scored only two.

Snow College continued to fight and scored three runs in the second inning. The Badgers would struggle offensively for the rest of the game, failing to score over the final five innings and would suffer a 12-5 loss.

The Badgers would then prepare to face preseason-ranked No. 9 EAC to wrap up Friday's games. Snow defeated the Vaqueros 9-4 at the Coyote Classic, but Friday's game got off to a slow start for both teams.  As the fifth inning came to a close, the Badgers had a 1-0 lead.  Snow College would have a strong sixth inning as it scored five runs.

CAC attempted to push ahead, scoring two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings, but it would not be enough, giving the Badgers a 6-4 victory.  Pitcher Brinsley Ellsworth would shine as she picked up her first win of the season having pitched six and two-thirds, allowing four earned runs, striking out seven, and walking just one batter.

Snow College began the final day of games by again playing CAC. The Badgers struggled offensively as they were shut out for the first time this year. Vaquero's pitcher Jessica Mercado would run the show as she pitched a complete game, scattering five hits, and finishing with an impressive 11 strikeouts. CAC would go on to win Saturday's game 3-0.

The Badgers would wrap up the weekend against EAC.  In their last matchup, the Badgers excelled winning 19-8, a game in which they hit five home runs. Kaylee Lyman and Bowers contributed two home runs each while Andrea Sweat added one.

Although Saturday's game got off to a slow start, the Badgers exploded offensively in the fifth inning as they drove in eight runs. This impressive inning would propel Snow College to a 9-4 victory.

Ellsworth performed brilliantly this weekend as she finished 2-0 while allowing six earned runs and striking out 13. Bowers finished the weekend going 8-14 with two home runs and six RBIs, making her the team's leader for RBIs with a total of 15 on the season.

The Badgers will now take nearly a month-long break and prepare to start conference play Friday, March 3 against the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. For video streaming and live stat information, visit snowbadgers.com.
