The Snow College women's basketball team was defeated 57-45 by the No. 4 College of Southern Idaho Thursday night in Twin Falls.
Â
Snow College entered Thursday's matchup after a heartbreaking road loss against Colorado Northwestern Community College in the final game of the regular season. Although the Badgers had a one-point lead with only six seconds left on the clock, the Spartans managed to sink a jumper at the buzzer for the win. With that basket, CNCC earned a 65-64 victory over Snow College. This was the Badger's first loss to the Spartans since Feb. 23, 2013, which snapped their 35-game winning streak.Â
Â
With an overall record of 12-15 during the season, the team qualified as the fourth seed in the Region 18 Tournament. This position pitted them against the 27-2 Golden Eagles. The last matchup between these two teams was Feb. 15 in which the Badgers suffered a brutal 80-37 defeat at home. This was the third and final meeting between Snow College and CSI in the regular season. The Golden Eagles were victorious in each game.Â
Â
The Badgers got off to a slow start following tip off. Snow College struggled offensively in the first quarter as it shot just 25 percent from the field and committed eight turnovers. Although CSI shot just 26 percent, they made up for it at the free-throw line and converted on five of six trips. Snow College could not find an offensive rhythm, and the team was held to three points or less for nearly all 10 minutes of play. The first quarter came to a close with CSI leading 17-5.Â
Â
The Badgers' offensive woes would follow them into the second quarter as the Golden Eagles continued to build their lead. With less than three minutes remaining in the first half, CSI led by as many as 22 points while Snow College remained in single digits. In the final two minutes of play, the Badgers managed to cut the lead to 15 points, but they still had a lot of ground to make up if they wanted to come out on top. The first half concluded with Snow College trailing 31-15.Â
Â
As the third quarter commenced, the Golden Eagles bounced back from their shooting difficulties to extend their lead. In the third quarter, CSI shot 43.8 percent from the field, compared to their 26.5 first-half average. Snow College continued to struggle, and they fell behind by as many as 26 points with 1:10 remaining. The third quarter came to a 50-26 close for the Golden Eagles.Â
Â
The final quarter of play would see a different Badger squad as they fought to keep their playoff hopes alive. Snow College opened the fourth quarter on a 10-0 run as it managed to cut CSI's lead to only 12 points. Samiana Suguturaga led the comeback for the Badgers as she tallied seven fourth-quarter points on 3-5 shooting from the field. However, despite Snow College's last-minute push to catch up to the Golden Eagles, it would prove to be too late. As the final seconds of play came to a close, the Badger's playoff aspirations faded. The final score saw Snow College suffer a 57-45 defeat.Â
Â
Suguturaga would lead the Badgers in scoring as she finished with 14 points, three blocks, and two steals. She was aided by Reagan Yamauchi who contributed 10 points on 4-8 shooting from the field, including 2-4 from 3-point range.Â
