The Snow College men's basketball team lost in the Region 18 championship game at the hands of No. 9 Salt Lake Community College Friday night in Twin Falls, Idaho. After upsetting the No. 1 College of Southern Idaho Thursday night, the Badgers looked to carry the momentum into the title game. However, the Bruins earned a 76-71 victory over Snow College to claim the Scenic West Athletic Conference Tournament Title.
The Badgers entered Friday night's game after a monumental win over the previously undefeated CSI Golden Eagles. Snow College was 0-3 against CSI during the regular season, but the team rallied together and came out with an 84-75 victory. In Thursday night's matchup, six Badgers scored in double figures as the team shot an impressive 48.4 percent from beyond the arc. With the win, Snow College claimed a berth into the Region 18 Title Game against SLCC.
In their last matchup against SLCC Feb. 9, the Badgers beat the Bruins 84-83 as Chase Potter sunk the game-winning free throw with only four seconds remaining. In that game, SLCC led by as many as 14 points in the second half. Snow College fought back into the game and ultimately won behind Potter's 18 points.
The Bruins came out ready to shoot early in the game. In the first half of play, SLCC pushed out to an early lead behind a convincing 55.9 percent shooting from the field. On the other hand, the Badgers struggled offensively as they shot just 37.5 percent from the field.
SLCC would go on an 8-0 run around the eight-minute mark of the first half to push the lead to 16 points. Although Snow College trimmed the gap to four points within the final five minutes, the Bruins quickly retaliated to reclaim a considerable lead. The first half came to a close with SLCC leading 44-32.
The second half would prove to be neck-and-neck as these two teams battled for the Region Title. The Badgers opened the second half on an 8-0 run to cut the Bruin's lead to only six points. Jamir Stephens and Potter jump started Snow College's offense as they combined for a total of 20 second-half points. The Badgers would take their first lead of the game with seven minutes to play.
Although Snow College would lead by as many as five points late in the game, SLCC fought back to retake the lead 71-69 with under a minute to play. The Badgers had a chance to take the lead on a 3-pointer with 26 seconds, but the shot was missed forcing the Badgers to foul. The Bruins made all four of their free throws in the final 15 seconds to hold on the the 76-71 victory.
Snow College was led in scoring by Potter who finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Stephens contributed 17 points on 6-11 shooting from the field. The Badgers finished the game with only 17 bench points while the Bruins' bench contributed 38 points.
With an overall record of 20-12, the Badgers would need to secure one of eight at-large bids in order to continue their season at the NJCAA National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas.
