The Snow College softball team was swept by the College of Southern Idaho in four games in Ephraim over the weekend.
The Badgers entered Friday's doubleheader coming off a series sweep at the hands of the No. 16 Salt Lake Community College Bruins last weekend. Although Snow College would stretch Friday's second game to nine innings, the team could not catch up to beat the Bruins. In those four games, the Badgers were defeated 8-0 and 22-18 in Friday's matchups and 18-4 and 11-2 in Saturday's games.
Snow College came into the weekend with a 16-11 record while the Golden Eagles had a 25-12 record. CSI was previously ranked No. 19 in the NJCAA Top 20, but the team's ranking was removed after dropping two games to the Badgers March 28.
These two squads met Twin Falls March 27 and 28 to make up games that had been canceled due to weather earlier in the season. In Monday's meetings, CSI came out victorious in both games as the team won 9-0 and 14-6. Snow College, however, would bounce back to take both of Tuesday's matchups, winning 13-3 and 14-12.
In game one of the series, the Badgers were unable to score and ultimately were defeated 9-0. In five innings of play, Snow College only managed two hits while the Golden Eagles combined for 10, one of which was a grand slam.
Snow College's hitting would improve in Friday's second matchup as the team rallied for six hits and brought in three runs. August Cowan excelled with a double and a solo home run while Tasia Shibuya and Hadlee Walker each added triples.
Despite the offensive improvements, however, the Badgers would still come up short against CSI in game two. The Golden Eagles earned their second victory of the series as they combined for nine hits. The final score saw Snow College fall 8-3.
Game three between these two teams would prove to be the most tightly-contested of the series. In the second inning, Shibuya launched a home run to left center which brought in Kaylee Lyman and Emily Higley. These runs would propel the Badgers to earn their first lead of the series. This lead, however, would be short-lived as CSI responded with four runs in the fourth inning and two runs in the fifth.
Snow College trailed 7-5 entering the final inning. An unearned run would put the Golden Eagles up 8-5 as the Badgers took their turn to bat. After a Shibuya double, Bailey Bowers blasted a home run to center field, bringing the Badgers within one. Snow College's aspirations were crushed, however, by a double play and a fly out which closed the game 8-7. Shibuya hit for the cycle in the loss.
The Golden Eagle's momentum followed them into the final game of the series. Within the first two innings, CSI combined for nine runs on eight hits as the team built a comfortable lead. Despite trailing early on, the Badgers would score the next five runs as they attempted to crawl back into the game. In the bottom of the second, Walker raked her fifth home run of the season to bring in Cowan. A sacrifice fly by Cowan allowed Shibuya to score in the third frame, and a single by Bowers in the fourth brought in two more runs for Snow College. The Badgers trailed 9-5 entering the sixth inning.
In the sixth and seventh innings, Snow College rallied for four runs on six hits. These efforts, however, were matched by the Golden Eagles as they too brought in four runs. The final matchup came to a 13-9 close as CSI sealed the series sweep.
Shibuya led the Badgers offensively as she finished with six hits in fourteen at bats, contributing one double, two triples, and one homer. Cowan reached base five time in the series collecting four hits including two doubles and a homer while driving in four RBIs.
Snow College (16-15/8-12) will look to break its eight-game losing streak as it travels to Price this weekend to take on Utah State University Eastern. This will be the first meeting between the two teams this season. The Badgers were originally scheduled to host the Eagles March 13 and 14 but those games were postponed due to unplayable field conditions.
Friday's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. with Saturday's doubleheader booked for 12:00 and 2:00 p.m. in Price. For video streaming and live stat information, visit snowbadgers.com.
