Badgers Out-Slug Spartans to Earn Series Sweep

The Snow College softball team faced off against Colorado Northwestern Community College Friday and Saturday. This series was the Badger's penultimate home series of the season. The weekend's double headers saw Snow College snap a 16-game losing streak as the squad cruised past the Spartans at home.

Friday's games saw the Badgers win 17-6 and 18-5 while Saturday's games ended with final scores of 18-2 and 20-0. With these victories, Snow College improves to an overall record of 20-23 and a 12-20 record within the Scenic West Athletic Conference.

In the Badger's last time out, they traveled to Las Vegas to take on the College of Southern Nevada. In that visit, Snow College was defeated 4-1 and 10-9 in Friday's matchups and 9-4 and 3-2 in Saturday's games.

Following these defeats, the 16-23 Badgers returned to Ephraim to host the struggling 0-32 Spartans. The last series between these two teams was held March 24-25 in Ephraim. Snow College dominated the series, claiming Friday's games with scores of 21-0 and 24-6, and Saturday's games 18-4, and 21-0.

The Badgers wasted no time scoring in the first game of the series.  In the first three frames, Snow College scored eight runs while allowing CNCC to score just two. Doubles from Hadlee Walker and Tasia Shibuya allowed the Badgers to have a monster third inning as the team totaled five runs.

Snow College, however, would beat that performance and rally for nine runs on eight hits in the fourth inning. In that frame, five Badgers would hit singles while Kaylee Lyman, McCall Maxfield, and Andrea Sweat each cranked triples. Despite the Spartan's four runs in the fifth inning, Snow College would push past CNCC 17-6 to claim game one.

The Spartans were first to strike in game two, and the first inning came to a 2-1 close for CNCC. This lead, however, would be short lived as the Badges would combine for 13 runs over the next two frames. The third inning saw Snow College explode for 11 runs on seven hits. In that inning alone, the Badgers crushed three home runs, two of which were hit by August Cowan and the other by Shibuya.

Snow College's momentum continued, and the squad scored four more runs in the fourth frame. Game two ultimately came to an 18-5 close, and the Badgers finished the day undefeated. Saige Ewing earned the win as she pitched five innings and finished with five strikeouts.

As the teams met again on Saturday, Snow College started the day with a bang. The team combined for nine runs in the first inning of game three, and followed up with six runs in the second inning. The Badgers built this lead thanks to two home runs from Bailey Bowers and one from Shibuya.

Snow College earned three more runs in the fourth inning by way of Sweat's second home run of the weekend. The Badgers would go on to win game three with a final score of 18-2. Kenley Henson earned the win for Snow College as she finished with five strikeouts in two innings.

Game four saw the Badgers shutout the Spartans as the team dominantly closed out the series. Snow College totaled eight runs in the first inning on eight hits. The squad followed this by scoring nine runs in the second frame. In that inning, Lyman, Walker, and Sweat each contributed doubles while Emma Higley crushed a homer to left field.

The Badgers brought in three more runs in the third inning and would go on to claim game four 20-0. Cowan took the win for Snow College as she pitched all five innings. She would finish the game with an impressive six strikeouts while allowing only two hits.

In this series, the Badgers were led in hitting by Bowers who finished with 11 hits in 15 at bats. She finished the weekend with six singles, two doubles, one triple, and two home runs. Walker and Shibuya also led Snow College offensively as each drove in 10 RBI's throughout the series.

The Badgers will next travel to Taylorsville to take on Salt Lake Community College May 5 and 6. The Bruins currently have an overall record of 33-9 and are 27-4 within the SWAC.

In their last series against SLCC, Snow College was defeated in all four games with scores of 9-0, 22-18, 18-4, and 11-2. Friday's meetings will begin at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. while Saturday's games are slated for 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m at the Norma Carr Softball Field in Taylorsville.
