The Snow College women's soccer team claimed one victory and one draw over the weekend against Utah State University Eastern and Colorado Northwestern Community College. The Badgers earned a 1-1 draw against the Eagles followed by a 2-0 victory over the Spartans.
Snow College entered the weekend coming off a pair of victories the week prior. The Badgers defeated Truckee Meadows Community College 8-1 and Pacific Northwest Community College 12-0.
It was a quiet first half as neither team was able to score. The Badgers had a few chances in the first ten minutes, but both shots on goal were turned away by the USUE keeper. They had two more shots on goal midway through the first half that were also saved. In total, the Badgers had five shots on goals that were all saved during the first 45 minutes.
Things quickly changed to begin the second half as the Eagles took just 19 seconds to break the scoreless tie. The Badgers quickly responded and evened things up in the 48
th minute.
Daisha Wagner and
Saige Meryhew worked together to beat the keeper. Wagner fed a pass to Meryhew who led Wagner back into the 18-yard box. Wagner was able to outrun her defender and was able to fire in a shot with the left foot to even the match at one.
The match remained tied at one throughout the remaining minutes of the second half and Snow College walked away with the draw.
Following the draw, the Badgers squared off with CNCC. The Badgers had a ton of success against the Spartans a season ago winning both matches by a cumulative score of 20-1. Saturday's match would prove to be much more competitive.
Bella Hicken broke through for the Badgers in the 10
th minute off a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box. She fired the ball past the keeper into the top left corner of the net to give the Badgers a 1-0 lead.
Snow College would strike again just a few minutes later.
Kadyn Hydar fed a pass forward to Wagner. Wagner beat her defender and fired the ball towards the goal. It was initially turned away by the CNCC keeper, but Meryhew was right there for the rebound and found the back of the net giving Snow College the 2-0 lead.
Following the goal, the Badger's defense took over from there. They allowed just three shots in the second half, none of which were on goal. Additionally, the Badgers committed just two fouls and allowed just one corner kick in the final 45 minutes of action. They held the Spartans scoreless to earn the 2-0 victory.
Snow College (5-2-1/4-1-1) will now turn its attention to No. 6 Salt Lake Community College in a matchup that could springboard the Badgers to the top of the Scenic West Athletic Conference standings. The Badgers defeated the Bruins 2-1 in Ephraim Saturday, Sept. 2. Snow College will head to Taylorsville this Saturday for the rematch. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. at the Bruin Soccer Field.
