The Snow College women's basketball team suffered a trio of defeats at the Lady Jets Holiday Classic in Americus, Georgia over the weekend. This marks the first time the Badgers have lost consecutive games all season.
The Badgers entered the weekend riding a five-game winning streak after winning all of their games in December to this point. They defeated Yavapai College 84-62 Dec. 13 in their most recent matchup before the three-day tournament in the Peach State.
Snow College started the weekend against the host school South Georgia Tech College. The Badgers suffered a 74-69 defeat despite leading by eight points at halftime. The Badgers shot 47 percent from the field en route to a 38-30 lead after the first two quarters.
The Jets closed the gap throughout the second half. The Badgers' good shooting from the first half cooled in the second half as they shot just 37 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes. SGTC would eventually creep ahead of the Badgers and hold on to the 74-39 victory.
Emily Evans led the Badgers in scoring with 14 points while also grabbing six rebounds.
Kiriana Hawaikirangi and
Brooke Pennington each scored 10 points on a cumulative 8-15 shooting from the field. Hawaikirangi also recorded seven rebounds and grabbed four steals.
The following day, the Badgers took on Daytona State College. They scored a season-low 42 points as well as shot a season-low 22 percent from the field throughout the game. The Badgers managed to score just 13 points in the first half and went into the halftime break trailing 30-13. They were unable to recover from the slow start and suffered a 60-42 defeat.
Snow College wrapped up the Lady Jets Holiday Classic against No. 4 Gulf Coast State College. GCSC shot out to a hot start outscoring the Badgers 22-12 in the first quarter. The Badgers would go into halftime trailing 42-28. The Commodores doubled up the Badgers in the third quarter and the lead would prove insurmountable as Snow College lost 94-65.
Ainsley Thurber led the Badgers with 16 points, four rebounds, and three steals. Madison Hosina added 14 points and grabbed six rebounds, while
Maliyah Elliott poured in 10 points in the loss.
The Lady Jets Holiday Classic will serve as the final non-conference games of the season. The Badgers will begin Scenic West Athletic Conference play as they take on North Idaho College Wednesday, Jan. 10.
