Women's Basketball Caps Weekend Split with Dominant Victory

The Snow College women's basketball team suffered an 84-74 loss against the College of Southern Nevada before capping off the weekend with an impressive 121-38 victory against Community Christian College.

The Badgers entered the weekend following a 1-1 start to Scenic West Athletic Conference play.  They defeated North Idaho College 78-70 before suffering a 91-49 defeat against No. 17 College of Southern Idaho.

CSN entered Thursday's matchup with a 17-1 overall record with its lone loss coming to Utah State University Eastern the prior weekend.  The Badgers went 2-1 against the Coyotes a season ago winning both matches in Las Vegas before dropping their home game to cap off the series.

The Badgers started the game quickly by jumping out to a 15-5 lead six minutes into action.  The Coyotes responded and proceeded to go on an 11-0 run through the end of the quarter to take a 1-point lead into the second period.

The Coyotes maintained the momentum into the second quarter despite a pair of lead changes.  The Badgers pulled within a point near the end of the stanza, but a Coyote's 3-pointer with five seconds on the clock gave them a 32-28 lead going into the halftime break.

The Badgers started the second half strong and took a one-point lead just two minutes into the half.  The Coyotes responded with a 10-2 run to take a 45-38 lead midway through the quarter.  CSN would extend the lead to 11 points, but over the final three minutes, the Badgers went on an 11-0 run to even the score.  Once again, however, a last-second shot from CSN gave the Coyotes a 59-57 lead heading into the final period.

The Coyotes used a 12-1 run through the middle minutes of the fourth quarter to take their largest lead of the game at 76-64.  The Badgers managed to cut the lead in half in the final minutes but were unable to completely overcome the deficit and suffered an 84-74 defeat.

Three Badgers finished in double figures led by Ainsley Thurber who had 19 points and seven rebounds.  Brooke Pennington scored 15 points, grabbed four rebounds, and handed out five assists.  Maliyah Elliott chipped in 14 points in the loss.

Following the loss, the Badgers took on CCC Saturday.  Snow College collected a convincing 121-38 victory against the Saints.  The 121 points scored against the Saints is the highest point total the Badgers have scored in over a decade.

The Badgers dominated from the opening tip outscoring the Saints 54-20 in the first half.  Snow College continued the momentum into the second half and went on to win 121-38.  The Badgers shot 73 percent from the field, which is their highest percentage from the field since they shot 81 percent in a 68-51 victory against Northwest College November 2, 2018.

Emily Evans led all scorers with a career-high 28 points while also grabbing eight rebounds.  Tevai Fisiipeau scored 18 points while Dalana Jakovljevic poured in 17 points.  Thurber finished with 16 while Enid Vaifanua chipped in 11 points and five assists.  Signe Bang added 10 points for the Badgers in the win.  Brooke Pennington chased a triple-double for much of the night and finished with nine points, eight rebounds, and 13 assists.

The Badgers will now turn their attention to No. 16 Utah State University Eastern.  The Eagles are 17-2 overall and 5-1 within the SWAC.  They are coming off a victory against North Idaho College and will take on Salt Lake Community College Wednesday in Taylorsville.

The Badgers will host the Eagles Saturday at 1 p.m. inside the Horne Activity Center in Ephraim.  For video streaming and live stat information, visit snowbadgers.com.
