The Snow College football team suffered a 31-24 overtime defeat to No. 3 Georgia Military College Saturday in Ephraim. With the loss, the Badgers now drop to 6-2 overall and out of the top four in the NJCAA Division I Football Poll.
Snow College entered the top-5 matchup following an 80-0 victory against Pacific Northwest Christian College the prior weekend in Kennewick, Washington.
Things started out rocky for the Badgers as they threw an interception on their fourth play from scrimmage, and GMC took over at the Snow College 32-yard line. The Bulldogs would capitalize on the turnover and kick a 33-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead.
Snow College put together a nice drive on the subsequent possession but came up empty. After failing to convert on a 3
rd-and-1, the Badgers went for it on fourth down but were again turned away and gave the ball back to the Bulldogs.
The Badgers appeared to record their first takeaway of the game as they recovered a fumble lost by Bulldogs' quarterback Chip Cooper, but the play was called back due to a facemask penalty.
The GMC possession continued, and they were able to take advantage and scored a touchdown on a 6-yard rush a few plays later to take a 10-0 lead. The Badgers cut into the deficit on their first drive of the second quarter.
Donnie Smith got the drive started with a 26-yard rush – his longest of the season. A pair of 10+ yard passes, the second of which on a 4
th-and-10, set the Badgers up at the 12.
Adonis Tillman scored two plays later on an 8-yard rush to cut the lead to 10-7 with 10 minutes to play in the half.
The Badgers did get their first takeaway on the next possession. As the Bulldogs were driving, the Snow College defense forced and recovered a fumble at their own 5-yard line. The Badgers then put together potentially their best drive of the season.
Snow College proceeded to drive 95 yards down the field on 10 plays to take the lead. Smith went 7-9 on the drive and helped the Badgers convert three 3
rd downs. Smith eventually found
Kaden Eggett for the 3-yard passing touchdown, and the Badgers would take the 14-10 lead into halftime.
The second quarter started favorably for the Badgers. After they were forced to punt on their first possession, the Bulldogs fumbled on their first play, and the Badgers took over at the GMC 17-yard line. The Badgers found paydirt on the second play of the drive as Smith found
Shandon King for a 17-yard pitch and catch, giving them a 21-10 lead.
Both teams exchanged punts before GMC took over at their own 31. The Bulldogs sustained a 12-play, 69-yard drive which culminated in a 1-yard rush to cut into the deficit. GMC maintained the momentum as they forced and recovered a Badger fumble to end the third quarter. The Badgers were not fazed after the turnover as
Bryan R. Cuthbertson intercepted Cooper in the early minutes of the fourth quarter to thwart the drive.
Snow College was unable to capitalize on the turnover and was forced into a 3-and-out. GMC struck quickly to take the lead. Cooper lofted up a pass, which was hauled in as two Badgers tried to knock it down. The receiver scampered untouched into the endzone and the Bulldogs regained the lead, 24-21.
A failed 4
th down conversion and a punt gave the ball to the Badgers with 5:24 to play. Needing a score, Snow College drove down the field and was faced with a 4
th-and-16. Smith found
De'yhare Overstreet for 20 yards to keep the drive alive.
The Badgers were eventually faced with a 4
th-and-5 from the GMC 17-yard line with 47 seconds left. After a timeout and some deliberation, the Badgers elected to kick a field goal to tie the game.
Keaton Rosquist's 34-yard field goal split the uprights and tied the game at 24 to force overtime.
GMC wasted no time as they scored a touchdown on the first possession of overtime and forced Snow College to match. After a 19-yard pass to Overstreet set up 1
st-and-goal, the Badgers had four plays to score. Snow College was unable to find the endzone as a Smith pass was just out of reach of
Drew Patterson on fourth down and the Badgers suffered the 31-24 loss.
As a team, the Badgers gained 377 yards of total offense. Smith went 22-42 for 253 yards and two touchdowns.
Matt Wilson gained 85 rushing yards on 26 attempts. Overstreet caught six passes for 100 yards in the loss.
The Badgers will now head out onto the road for the final time this season and take on New Mexico Military Institute Saturday in Roswell, New Mexico. The Broncos are 3-5 this season and are coming off a 32-9 loss against Trinity Valley Community College last weekend. Saturday's matchup is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. inside the Wool Bowl.
