Women's Basketball Stretches Win Streak to Six Over CNCC, SLCC

The Snow College women's basketball team extended its win streak to six after sweeping the last road weekend of the season. The Badgers first downed Colorado Northwestern Community College 69-46 followed by defeating Salt Lake Community College 64-60.

The Badgers were coming off a 45-32 victory over Utah State University Eastern Feb. 13. These three wins have helped propel the Badgers into third place in the Scenic West Athletic Conference standings.

The Spartans came out ready to play in the first quarter as they got up 10-6 in the first four minutes of the game. The Badgers answered back with a 7-2 run to regain the lead and enter the second period with a 13-12 edge.

Snow College was unable to distance itself from CNCC as the teams exchanged the lead four times throughout the second quarter. The Spartans took a one-point lead two minutes into the period. The remaining eight minutes saw a 7-3 run in favor of the Badgers as Iyana Beh (So./Murray, Utah/Murray HS) netted all seven points during this burst. Snow College led 23-20 entering halftime.

The Spartans began the second half with a 6-2 run to take their final lead of 26-25, before a Badger 6-0 burst gave them the lead for good. Snow College finished the period on a 16-9 run to finally push the Spartans to arms length leading 47-35 entering the fourth quarter.

The Badgers stayed hot going into the fourth period shooting 10-16 from the field – a 62 percent clip. Snow College netted 22 points while limiting CNCC to 11 points in the final 10 minutes. Beh netted nine of the 22 fourth-quarter points for the Badgers.

Snow College defeated the Spartans 69-46 while shooting 47 percent from the field. With the win, the Badgers have also swept the season series against CNCC.

Beh led all scorers netting a career-high 26 points, shooting 10-12 from the field and 6-7 from the foul line. Beh also grabbed seven of the 37 Badger rebounds.

Snow College then traveled to SLCC the following Saturday. The Badgers dropped to the Bruins 84-52 earlier this season.

Brooke Pennington (So./Springville, Utah/Springville HS) started the explosive first-quarter scoring with a 6-0 individual run in the first two minutes of the game. The Badgers then maintained a one possession lead before the Bruins knotted the game at 20 to end the first quarter.

The Bruins snagged the first two points of the second quarter to go up 22-20 after three scoreless minutes for both teams. This was the last lead the Bruins held for the rest of the game. The scoring got reheated as the Badgers wrapped up the first half on the positive end of a 15-10 run to lead 35-32 at halftime.

The Badgers came out of the break on a 8-2 burst through the first four minutes of the second half forcing an SLCC timeout. The Bruins successfully stopped the Badger run and answered back with a 6-0 burst to pull back with two.

Hadley Richins (So./Henefer, Utah/North Summit HS) then sparked a 7-3 run after picking up a steal and a fast-break layup. The third quarter wrapped up with Snow College leading 50-44.

SLCC caught fire in the fourth quarter going on a 12-6 run in the first seven minutes to knot the game at 56. The Badgers then scored five of the next nine points before Madison Hosino (So./Layton, Utah/Northridge HS) hit the dagger 3-pointer to go up by four with under a minute remaining. The Bruins turned the ball over on the subsequent possession, and the Badgers secured the 64-60 victory.

Hosino led all Badger scorers with 14 points going 4-5 from the arc and 5-7 from the field. Kiriana Hawaikirangi (So./Kalgoorlie, Australia/Eastern Goldfields College) followed closely with 12 points.

The Badgers will now return home for the remainder of the regular season. Snow College will first host the College of Southern Idaho Thursday Feb. 27. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. The Badgers will then host North Idaho College Saturday Mar. 1 at 1:00 p.m. Both games will be played inside the Horne Activity Center in Ephraim.
