The Snow College women's basketball team iced Idaho with a pair of victories against the No. 14 College of Southern Idaho and North Idaho College. The Badgers defeated the Golden Eagles 69-60 before taking down the Cardinals 76-69. Snow College is now 14-9 overall with a 3-5 conference record.
Snow College was coming off a tough loss to Utah State University Eastern dropping 51-50. This loss to the Eagles gave the Badgers a four-game losing streak after starting the season 12-5.
The Badgers started the game with a 4-0 burst to jump out ahead of CSI early. Snow College added six more points throughout the quarter and shut down the Golden Eagles offense only allowing eight in the first.Â
The offense heated up for both teams in the second period as each scored in the high teens. CSI started the quarter on a 5-3 burst to knot the game at 13. The next eight points were split to tie the game at 17 before the Badgers went on a 10-7 run to end the quarter. Snow College entered halftime with a 27-24 lead.
The scoring stayed hot as both teams netted 20 points each in the third period. The Badgers maintained a one possession lead until 1:26 left in the quarter when CSI knotted it at 42. The Badgers retook the lead and led by three entering the final period.
The Badgers maintained the lead with a 7-5 run through the first five minutes of the fourth quarter to go up 54-49. Snow College followed this up with an 8-3 run to take a 10-point lead at 64-54. The Badgers kept the Golden Eagles at arm's length, taking a 12-point lead with 15 seconds left before giving up a desperation three to finalize the game at 69-60.
The Badgers shot an incredible 62 percent from the field – by far their best shooting performance of the season – while leading for over 36 minutes of the 40-minute match. Snow College dominated the key with 40 points coming from within the paint. The Badgers never trailed during the second half en route to their second victory over a ranked team this season.
Kiriana Hawaikirangi (So./Kalgoorlie, Aus./Eastern Goldfields College) led all scorers while setting a new season high in points with 18 against CSI. Brooke Pennington (So./Springville, Utah/Springville HS) finished with 13 points. Iyana Beh (So./Murray, Utah/Murray HS) shot perfectly going 6-6 from the field to net 12 points.
Snow College then traveled to NIC and extended its new win-streak to two. The Badgers suffered a 72-57 defeat to the Cardinals earlier this season.
The two teams battled hard throughout the first quarter with four lead changes and three ties. The Badgers were able to find a lead of 14-12 to finish up the first period.
The first five minutes of the second quarter was even as both teams added 10 to their ledgers. The Cardinals then went on a 13-7 burst to wrap up the first half with a 35-31 lead.
Both teams stalled in scoring throughout the third quarter with the Badgers out scoring the Cardinals 10-6. Snow College was able to knot the game at 41 to enter the fourth quarter.
The fourth period remained close as the scoring reignited with both teams netting 17 in the period. Neither team ever gained more than a one-possession lead throughout the quarter.
Snow College led by three with 30 seconds left before the Cardinals knotted the game at 58. The Badgers had a few looks but were unable to score, forcing the game into overtime.
The Badgers went on a 9-4 run over the first two and a half minutes of overtime to go up 67-62. Snow College then wrapped up the game on a 9-7 run in the final minute to claim the 76-69 victory.
Beh recorded a new career high with 22 points against the Cardinals and was one rebound shy of her fourth double-double of the season. This was Beh's first 20-point game of her career.
Hawaikirangi added 17 points to the victory, eight of which coming in overtime, as well as nine from the charity stripe.Â
Seini Tuipulotu (So./Reno, Nevada/Damonte Ranch HS) also recorded a career-high with 11 points, capped off with a massive three to put the Badgers up two possessions in overtime.
