OPENING KICK: The Snow College men's soccer team continues its string of road games and takes on the College of Southern Idaho Thursday in Twin Falls, Idaho, at 3:30 p.m. before heading to Reno, Nevada, Saturday to take on Truckee Meadows Community College at 2:30 p.m. MDT.
The Badgers are coming off a split weekend with a win over Pacific Northwest Christian College, 7-0, and falling to No. 20 North Idaho College, 1-0.
KNOW YOUR FOE: CSI currently sits in first place in the Scenic West Athletic Conference standings with a conference record of 4-0-1. They are currently one point ahead of the Badgers heading into their meeting Thursday.
CSI has picked up its victories against TMCC (2-0), PNWCC (2-1), NIC (1-0), and Colorado Northwestern Community College (3-2). Their lone draw came against Salt Lake Community College 2-2.
The Badgers have picked up similar wins against PNWCC (7-0), CNCC (1-0), and SLCC (1-0). Snow College dropped its game against NIC (1-0) and will play TMCC Saturday for the first time this season.
The Golden Eagles are in their second year as a program. They faced the Badgers twice last year, losing the first game in Ephraim, 6-2, before drawing the second game 1-1 to end their season.
The Badgers will then travel to take on TMCC. The Lizards are currently 3-5 with a 2-3 conference record. Their wins came against PNWCC (2-0) and CNCC (2-1).
Snow College is 9-2-1 all-time against TMCC, with their matches last year ending in a 3-2 win at home for the Badgers and a 1-1 draw on the road. The Badgers have a 4-1-1 record on the road against the Lizards while averaging 2.5 goals per game.
RECORD WATCH: Mathias Christensen currently has 85 saves through his career at Snow College and sits in fourth on the all-time leaderboard, two saves behind Nick McNeil's 87 in third place, which was set in 2022-2023.
Christensen recorded a combined five saves against PNWCC and NIC. He is 14 saves off from breaking the record of 98, set by Jason Myers in 2018-2019, and needs to average 1.6 saves per game to claim the record.
LAST TIME OUT: The Badgers opened up the scoring early, scoring a trio of goals in the first 20 minutes of regulation. The first came when
Kade Davis notched one past the keeper in the 11th with the assist from
Francisco Madeira.
They scored again in the 13th minute off the foot of
Carter Archuleta, who was assisted by
Josh Kilsby.
Mateus Romualdo finished the trio of goals, slamming one home in the 19th minute on an assist from
Isaac Stanley, bringing the score to 3-0 entering half.
Snow College scored four more times in the second half, kicking the scoring off right away in the 47th, where
Jeff De Coteau found the net with an assist from
Bailey Smith.
Liam Kilbane joined the scoring frenzy in the 71st on an assist from
Max Palmer.
Jorge Beltran was the only Badger to score multiple goals, knocking them in the 60th and 85th minutes. He was assisted by both De Coteau and
Max Sloan, respectively, bringing the final score to 7-0.
Following the match against PNWCC, the Badgers took on NIC, the only other ranked team in the Scenic West Athletic Conference outside of Snow College.
The match opened with both teams trading possessions and putting early shots up, with the Badgers putting four shots up and the Cardinals putting up three of their own in the first 21 minutes of the contest. Both teams continued a defensive battle throughout the first half, leading to a 0-0 score at the break.
The Badgers at the end of the first half had five shots, three of which found their way on net but were saved by the NIC goalkeeper.
Mathias Christensen recorded two saves in the first half for the Badgers. NIC recorded four shots while also recording three saves of its own.
The second half followed a similar theme to the first, with it being a defensive battle to open it up. Eventually, the Cardinals were able to find the back of the net in the 71st minute, making the score 1-0. It is the first goal the Badgers have allowed in the last five games.
The Badgers tried to even the game up and almost got one past the NIC goalkeeper in the 80th minute, but the Cardinals held strong, bringing the final score to 1-0.
Snow College finished the game with 14 total shots, six of which found their way on net but were all turned away by the Cardinal keeper. Christensen finished the game with three saves and conceded one goal. He recorded five saves over the weekend, bringing him to within 14 of the school record for career saves.
NEXT TIME UP: The Badgers will stay on the road as they play one game next week against their in-state rival, Utah State University Eastern, Oct. 4 at 3:30 p.m. The Eagles sit in third place in the SWAC standings and are just outside of the NJCAA men's soccer poll.
