Badgers Suffer Sweep Against No. 21 SLCC

The Snow College softball team suffered its first sweep of the season against No. 21 Salt Lake Community College over the weekend in Taylorsville. The Badgers are fourth in the Scenic West Athletic Conference standings with a conference record of 3-9.

The Badgers are coming off their first home action of the season, where they won one game against No. 22 College of Southern Idaho on a walk-off sacrifice fly by Gigi Hall

The Badgers struck first in game one in the top of the first after loading the bases early, followed by a pair of walks from Rian Howland and Taimane Laolagi-Aloy, putting the Badgers up two. Avery Thorkelson capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly to left field. SLCC responded with two runs of their own over the bottom of the first and second to cut the lead to one.

The Badgers extended their lead with a pair of home runs from Grace Thomas and Laolagi-Aloy before the Bruins hit a trio of their own to take a 7-5 lead after four. Thomas tied the game in the top of the fifth with her second homer of the day. SLCC closed the game with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to win game one 10-7.

The second game saw SLCC get on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first and again in the bottom of the third. The Badgers took the lead in the top of the fourth off a Chely Deleon single that scored Laolagi-Aloy.

An error by the SLCC pitcher allowed both Howland and Thorkelson to score to bring the score to 3-2 in favor of the Badgers. SLCC then piled on a run in each of the bottom of the fourth and fifth before a seven-run sixth inning ended the game by run-rule 11-3.

The Badgers opened day two with a bang as Laolagi-Aloy and Brooke Fisher both hit three-run big flies in the top of the first and second, respectively. Brynlee Riedle added to the Badgers' lead in the top of the third off a fielder's choice that scored Thorkelson, bringing the score to 7-0.

SLCC cut into the lead with three runs across the third and fifth. The Badgers scored a run in the sixth before an SLCC three-run homer in the bottom of the frame brought the Badger lead down to two, 8-6. Nev Carrasquel pushed the Badger lead back to three with a single down the left line. The Badgers surrendered four runs in the bottom of the seventh for a 10-9 SLCC victory.

In the final game, SLCC blitzed out to an early 5-0 lead after two innings. The Badgers got on the board in the top of the third off a Chloe Tycksen sacrifice to the SLCC shortstop that scored Carrasquel, followed directly by a two-run home run by Fisher. The Bruins outpaced the Badgers 7-1 over the rest of the game to finish it after six, 12-4.

Laolagi-Aloy led the Badgers offensively, going 4-11 from the dish with two home runs, five RBIs, and a pair of walks. Thomas followed closely behind, going 4-13 from the plate with two home runs of her own and a double.

Snow College will have a week break before returning to action against Utah State University Eastern April 3 and 4 in Price. The four-game set is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. with day two starting at 12:00 p.m. For video streaming and live stat information, visit snowbadgers.com.
