Badger woes continue with OT loss to Broncos

Box Score EPHRAIM — The Snow College Badgers lost again on Saturday, forcing overtime with the New Mexico Military Broncos before going down for the fifth straight time. Snow sophomore kicker Spencer Groner tied the game at 17 with 2.1 seconds remaining in regulation on a 45-yard field goal, and then hit a 21-yarder in overtime. But the Broncos out-did the Badgers in the extra period with a 13-yard TD pass to ruin Snow's homecoming, 23-20.

Snow trailed the entire game until a wild rally in the game's final seven minutes gave the Badgers a shot at earning a much-needed win.  Down 17-7, the Badgers got the ball following a punt at their own 25 with 6:57 remaining. Wide receiver Chase Loftin, who had been silent up that point, pulled in three receptions as the Badgers drove the field, the third a 20-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Crosby Jensen which pulled the Badgers to within three with just over four minutes remaining.

After a failed onside kick, the Broncos drove down to the Badger red zone where Hunter Heck, who already had one field goal to his credit for NMMI, lined up for a 34-yard attempt that would stretch the Bronco lead to six. But sophomore Tre James squeezed through the line to block the attempt and give Badgers the ball at their own 33, down three with one minute and no times out remaining.

From there Jensen completed two more to Loftin along with outside passes to wide receivers Jordan Ososky and Connor McGuire, with the Badger receivers able to get out of bounds or earn first downs to stop the clock. The Badgers moved the ball to the 28, setting up Groner for his 45-yard game-tying field goal.

Snow got the ball first in overtime and drove inside the Bronco 10-yard line. But the Badger drive stalled and Groner knocked home a 21-yard field goal to give Snow its only lead of the game, 20-17. In NMMI's overtime possession, Billerman hit a wide-open Carpenter for a 13-yard touchdown to end the game.

NMMI had the first score of the game on a 54-yard pass from Quinn Billerman to Zack White late in the first quarter. Snow tied the game at seven on a 15-yard run by Louis Hamilton early in the second. The Broncos took a 14-7 lead with under a minute-and-a-half left before halftime on another long pass play, this time Billerman hitting Delvon Carpenter from 61 yards out.

Jensen finished with 221 yards on 21 of 41 passing. Snow's Daniel Palepoi led all rushers in the game with 85 yards on 21 carries. Billerman was 17 of 31 passing for 322 yards for the Broncos.

With the loss, Snow (1-5 overall, 1-4 in league) has lost five games in a season for the first time since 1990 and has lost five in a row for the first time since 1975. The Badgers will try to right the ship on Saturday when they take on Eastern Arizona in Thatcher, Ariz.
