Box Score The #4 Snow College Badgers proved to be too much for the high scoring Phoenix College Bears in a 60-42 shootout in Arizona. After a pair of lead changes, the Bears kept the game close until mid-way through the third quarter as Snow pulled away from a one point lead at 31-30 to close out the game 18 points ahead and improve to 5-0 on the season. Snow's special teams played a key role as they gave the offense great field position throughout the game on returns by
Jonah Trinnaman and a punt return for a touchdown by
Parker Preator.
After a 46 yard field goal on their first drive, Snow put up an early 10-0 lead as QB
Stefan Cantwell threw a booming pass down field that connected with WR
Jonah Trinnaman who sprinted out underneath it to catch the ball in stride on his way into the endzone for a 73 yard touchdown.
Phoenix got right back into the game as they returned the ensuing kickoff 94 yards to the Snow 1 yard line. The Bears would score on a run up the middle to quickly cut into Snow's 10 point lead. Phoenix would capitalize on a Snow fumble and take the lead at 14-10 on an 18 yard touchdown pass over the middle with 3:37 left in the first quarter.
After two costly back-to-back penalties that took Snow back to their own 11 yard line, the offense responded quickly to get back to midfield where Cantwell threw another long ball that connected with WR
Deondre Vines for a 49 yard touchdown to give the Badgers a 17-14 lead.
Snow would find their way back to the endzone on an 8 yard touchdown run by RB
Stephen Shepard with 10:45 remaining in the half. Snow's special teams added to the lead as
Parker Preator picked up a line-drive punt off the bounce and weaved his way through traffic and into the endzone for a 65 yard touchdown return and a 31-14 lead.
Phoenix added to their first half score with a 43 yard field goal, but the Badgers' defense held the Bears to a total of 9 rushing yards on 8 attempts with 110 yards in the air for the first two quarters.
The Bears opened the second half with a touchdown on their first drive as they started with good field position and moved down the field to end the drive on a 2 yard touchdown pass to bring them within 8 at 31-23 after an unsuccessful extra point attempt.
Phoenix's defense made a statement on their first outing of the second half as they intercepted Cantwell's pass and took it back into the endzone to make it a one point game at 31-30.
Snow's offense would capitalize on great field position from a Trinnaman return to midfield and increase their lead to 38-30 on a 10 yard Shepard run with 4:25 left in the third quarter.
The Bear's offense responded quickly with a 64 yard pass that put them right back in scoring position. Phoenix would score on a 7 yard pass, but another botched hold on the extra point forced the Bears to attempt a two point conversion that was intercepted by Braxton Winterton and returned 99 yards for 2 points to keep the Badgers in control at 40-36.
The Badgers' offense responded immediately with a 56 yard pass play to Trinnaman to set up a 5 yard touchdown run by Josh Labrador to make it 47-36.
Parker Preator put a stop to a Phoenix drive that was closing in on another touchdown as he picked off a pass in the endzone to get Snow's offense back on the field. The Badgers would capitalize with a short screen pass that Trinnaman would take down the sideline for 69 yards and a touchdown to make it 54-36 early in the fourth quarter.
Snow would cap their lead as
Stephen Shepard picked up his third touchdown of the night with a 5 yard touchdown run to make it 60-36 with 3:30 left in the game. Phoenix's final score came on an 18 yard pass with 1:11 left to make it 60-42.
The 5-0 Badgers will be back home on October 10
th to take on New Mexico Military at noon.
