Box Score The No. 6 Snow College Badgers handed the No. 18 Scottsdale Community College Artichokes their first loss of the season in a 31-14 battle over the weekend. The Artichokes were responsible for Snow's only losses last year and with touchdowns on special teams, offense and defense, the Badgers made sure history would not be repeated.
The Badgers scored on a 99 yard touchdown return by
Jonah Trinnaman on the opening kickoff and they did not trail for the rest of the game. Scottsdale's opening drive resulted in a missed 37 yard field goal, which was immediately followed by a 60 yard pass from
Stefan Cantwell to Calief Samon to put Snow right back in scoring position. Snow would take a 14-0 lead with 10:30 remaining in the first quarter on a 3 yard touchdown run by
Stephen Shepard.
Scottsdale's defense kept the game close as they intercepted Cantwell twice in the first quarter to keep the Badgers out of the endzone. After a fumbled punt return by Snow that landed the Artichokes with great field position at the Snow 28 yard line, Scottsdale capitalized on a 20 yard touchdown pass to bring them within 7 at 14-7 with 1:22 remaining in the first quarter.
Snow's defense was the deciding factor of the 2
nd quarter as
Tamiela Tuuhetaufa came up with an interception in Artichoke territory that would set up a 4 yard touchdown run by Cantwell to make it 21-7. It would take less than 4 minutes for the defense to shine again when
Parker Preator stripped the ball from Hiram Velez and ran it down the sideline for a 33 yard touchdown to make it a 28-7 game with 6:10 remaining in the first half. Scottsdale got back into scoring position at Snow's 5 yard line, but the Badgers' defense was able to keep the Artichokes out of the endzone and get the ball back after forcing a turnover on downs.
There was only one touchdown in the second half as Scottsdale's Tyler Bruggman scored on a 2 yard TD run midway through the 3
rd quarter to make it 28-14. Snow would add to the final tally with a 30 yard field goal by
Moose Bingham close out the game at 31-14.
Snow moves to 3-0 as they get set to take on Glendale Community College at the Homecoming game on Sept. 26 in Ephraim. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM.
