Wrestling Programs Embark on Inaugural Season

The men's and women's wrestling teams will begin their first season as Snow College sponsored sports with the Blue and Orange Scrimmage Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in Richfield.

The scrimmage will see 43 student-athletes – 22 men and 21 women – compete for a spot to be part of the 10-person competition team once the season starts November 2 for the men and November 5 for the women.

Both the men's and women's wrestling programs are fully sanctioned programs and are beginning their first seasons of competition under the Snow College Athletics umbrella.  The men's program becomes just the second collegiate men's wrestling program in the state joining Utah Valley University.

The women's wrestling program becomes the only collegiate women's wrestling program in the state of Utah.  The Utah High School Activities Association sanctioned women's wrestling at the high school level for the 2020-21 season where 350 girls signed up.  That number jumped to 750 girls for the 2021-22 season and that number is expected to double for the 2022-23 season.

"It truly is a landmark moment for the state, the college, and women's wrestling," women's wrestling Head Coach Ross Taylor said.  "For Snow College to have the first collegiate women's wrestling program in the state will give us a major leg up on any other schools."

Both the men's and women's wrestling teams will field 10 student-athletes during competitions.  The men, who will compete in the 125, 133, 141, 149, 157, 165, 174, 184, 197, and 285-pound weight divisions, will compete in folk style wrestling, which is primarily used at the collegiate and high school levels.

The women, who will compete in the 101, 109, 116, 123, 130, 136, 143, 155, 170, and 191-pound weight divisions, will compete in free style wrestling which is the method used primarily in the Olympics.

The doors for the intrasquad scrimmage will open at 6:00 p.m. where there will be a tailgate open to the public.  During the tailgate there will be popcorn, cotton candy, rally rags, t-shirts, and a pop-up shop with Snow College apparel.  Admission to the event, which will begin at 7:00 p.m. inside the Sevier Valley Center, will be free.

The men's wrestling team will begin the season November 2 with a dual against Western Wyoming Community College beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Richfield.  The women's wrestling team will start their season at the Maverick Open in Grand Junction, Colorado November 5 beginning at 8:00 a.m.  For additional information, visit snowbadgers.com.
