Five second-half goals propelled the Snow College men's soccer team to a 6-1 victory over Colorado Northwestern Community College Thursday in Rangely.
Having won five of their previous six games, Snow College entered Thursday's matchup hoping for a season sweep of the Spartans after defeating them 9-0 September 22 in Ephraim. While the offense was slow going in the first half, the Badgers scored five goals in the second half to earn their ninth victory of the season and their third straight.
Itsuki Matsuyama got the scoring started in the 28
th minute off an assist from
Arthur Macri.
Ricardo Joasilus and Lute Avile teamed up to give the Badgers a 2-0 lead with the former being on the business end of the goal.
James Miles and Yuito Oari scored a pair of unassisted goals in the 63
rd and 79
th minutes, respectively. The Spartans cut into the lead with a goal in the 82
nd minute, but
Hiroki Okada scored two goals withing 90 seconds of each other to give the Badgers a 6-1 lead that they would sit on until the final whistle.
Snow College now sits at 9-3 overall and 7-2 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference play, which is good enough for third place within the conference behind Utah State University Eastern and Salt Lake Community College.
The Badgers will host No. 2 SLCC Saturday. A scenario exists where Snow College could win the conference and host the conference tournament. They would need to win their remaining games and hope SLCC loses or ties in one of their final two matches versus Truckee Meadows Community College and Utah State University Eastern. The match is set to begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Snow College Soccer Complex in Ephraim.
