Badgers Take on No. 2 Bruins, TMCC to Begin Conference Play

TURNING THE PAGE: Snow College will try to brush off a heartbreaking double-overtime loss as it begins Scenic West Athletic Conference play Thursday against Salt Lake Community College and Saturday against Truckee Meadows Community College.

The Badgers enjoyed a 2-1 homestead with wins coming against Laramie County Community College (4-3) and Northwest College (5-1) to open up their season.  Then travesty struck as Snow College suffered its first home loss since September 9, 2021 in a 4-2 loss against the College of Southern Nevada.

The loss struck with a Casper College golden goal nine seconds before the end of the second overtime period and thusly a 2-2 draw.  The Badgers will have to turn the page quickly as they turn their attention to one of the top dogs in all the land.  SLCC is in a tie for the No. 2 ranked team in the country.  The Bruins moved up one spot from last week after wins over No. 19 Eastern Florida State College (3-2 OT) and Central Wyoming College (5-0).

LAST TIME OUT: A golden goal with less than 10 seconds remaining in the match saw Casper College defeat the No. 12 ranked Badgers at home Saturday afternoon.  The Thunderbird's Ewan Gordon slipped one past Snow College keeper Nick McNeil to give Casper the 3-2 victory.

Snow College found itself with an early lead as Nick Gummow netted the first tally for the Badgers in the fifth minute.  The lead was short lived, however as the Thunderbirds would respond with goals in the 16th and 25th minutes.  Casper would take the 2-1 lead into halftime.

Hugo Champalloux and Zachary Lifferth would connect with the equalizer in the 59th minute as Liffereth took the pass and with some fancy footwork evened the score two apiece.

The 2-2 score held over the final 31 minutes of regulation and though the first 10-minute overtime.  It was when the second overtime was waning that Gordon was able to net the golden goal with nine seconds left to give the T-Birds a last-second victory.

Snow College totaled 31 shots throughout the match in comparison to just 10 total shots for the T-Birds.

HISTORY WITH SLCC: It's been a rocky history with the Bruins.  Snow College has an overall record of 5-13-2 against the Bruins with its most recent win coming on October 27, 2018 in a 3-2 road victory.  Since then, the Badgers have suffered seven straight losses and one tie leading up to Thursday's contest.

In its wins against the Bruins, Snow College averages 2.8 goals per game, but in its losses, the Badgers average less than a goal per game.  Snow College will aim for the upset Thursday with kickoff slated for 3:30 p.m.

HISTORY WITH TMCC: Snow College has mostly controlled the matchup against the Lizards going 5-1 in the short history.  The Badgers won the first match back on September 9, 2021 with a 6-2 victory.  That matchup would be the most lopsided contest between the two teams.  TVCC grabbed its lone win on October 10, 2019 in a 2-1 final score.

The Badgers are taking a current four-game win streak into Saturday's contest including a pair of 3-2 victories last season against the Lizards.  Snow College will hope to extend the streak to five games Saturday with kickoff scheduled at 2:30 p.m. MST.

NEXT UP: The Badgers will continue their road swing as they take on the College of Southern Nevada Thursday, September 8 in Henderson, Nevada at 4:30 p.m. MST, followed by a  matchup with Community Christian College at 1:30 p.m. MST.
