The Snow College men's basketball team dropped a 91-87 heartbreaker to the College of Southern Nevada Thursday in Ephraim. With the loss, the Badgers have now lost four out of their last five games.
Snow College entered the matchup after suffering a 101-64 loss to No. 2 College of Southern Idaho last Thursday. Despite the loss, the Badgers stood in third place within the Scenic West Athletic Conference standings.
It was the
Zach Visentin show early in the first half. The 6'10 Center used his size advantage to score 16 points in the first seven minutes of action to give the Badgers a 20-11 lead. Visentin picked up his second foul with 12 minutes to go and had to sit much of the rest of the half.
The Coyote's offense came to life as they went on an 18-3 run over the next three minutes to take a 29-23 lead midway through the half. Snow College would keep the score close and eventually tie things up at 43. CSN's Ray Daniels hit a 17-foot jump shot with one second left on the first-half clock to give the Coyotes a 48-47 lead at halftime.
The Coyotes, a team who entered the matchup shooting 46 percent from the field as a team, connected on 55 percent of their attempts from the field in the first half. The good shooting would continue in the second half for the Coyotes.
The second half was back and forth the whole way as there were five ties and eight lead changes throughout the final 20 minutes of game time. Neither team led by more than seven points in the second half.
Snow College led 73-69 midway through the second half following a step-back 3-pointer from
Gaige Savage and a layup by Colin Christenson. The Coyotes responded and went on an 8-0 run over the next three minutes to regain a five-point lead.
CSN would maintain that lead over the next few minutes and would eventually take an 86-79 lead with just under four minutes to play. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Savage and a hook shot from Visentin brought the Badgers within one with 45 seconds to play.
The Badgers were unable to get a defensive stop on the ensuing possession as CSN's Anthony Swift hit a layup between two defenders to put the Coyotes back up by three. Snow College's 3-point attempt on the next possession was blocked by Swift, and CSN would hold on to win 91-87.
CSN shot 58 percent from the field in the second half and 57 percent for the game, 11 points higher than its season average. The Coyotes also scored 34 points in the paint in the second half to hold on to the victory.
Visentin was three points off from matching his career high in points as he finished with 25. Savage put in 19 points on five made threes, both career highs.
Max Triplett also recorded a career high with 12 points and six rebounds for the Badgers.
Snow College, now sitting at 14-6 overall and 5-3 within SWAC play, will head back out onto the road to take on No. 4 Salt Lake Community College Thursday in Taylorsville.
