The Snow College men's soccer team split a pair of matches against No. 13 Utah State University Eastern and Colorado Northwestern Community College over the weekend. The Badgers fell 1-0 against the Eagles followed by a 6-0 victory over the Spartans.
Snow College came into the weekend with a 2-2-1 overall record. The Badgers were coming off a 6-0 victory against Pacific Northwest Christian College the previous weekend.
Thursday's matchup against the Eagles was a physical one. Between the two teams, a total of 43 fouls, 10 yellow cards, and two red cards were handed out throughout the course of the match.
The Badgers had opportunities to score in the first half. They tallied a total of six corner kicks and two shots on goal, but every opportunity was denied and they went into halftime locked at 0-0.
USUE scored the lone goal of the game in the 55
th minute. Following a Snow College foul, the Eagles lofted on into the box from 30 yards out where it was headed into the back of the net giving them a 1-0 advantage.
Following the goal, Snow College was able to put three shots on goal, but all were turned away by the USUE keeper. The Badgers were unable to score and suffered the 1-0 defeat.
The Badgers quickly pivoted to take on CNCC. The Badgers earned two victories against the Spartans last season and would continue that success Saturday. They opened the scoring early in the match as
Victor Flores scored in the sixth minute.
Jack Cook and
Nefthaly Loya also recorded goals in the first half as Snow College took a 3-0 lead into the halftime break. The Badgers put up a total of 23 shots including 13 shots on goal. They allowed just three corner kicks throughout the match.
Olumide Sonubi scored on a corner kick in the 69
th minute.
Anderson Brown lofted a ball near the far post where Sonubi leaped into the air and found the back of the net.
Mucioko Banza and
Richard Henry also scored near the end of the second half to give the Badgers a 6-0 victory.
Snow College (3-3-1/2-3-1) will now play a non-conference matchup against Lake Tahoe Community College Monday in Lake Tahoe, California. The Badgers will return to conference play as they take on Salt Lake Community College Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in Taylorsville.
