The Snow College women's soccer team defeated No. 2 Salt Lake Community College 2-1 to open Scenic West Athletic Conference play Saturday in Ephraim. Two second-half goals propelled the Badgers to victory over the Bruins.
The Badgers entered the matchup with a 1-1 overall record and were coming off a 1-0 victory over Casper Community College the week prior.
Daisha Wagner's goal in the 60
th minute was the difference in the victory over the Thunderbirds.
Snow College and SLCC squared off three times against each other last season. The Badgers were 1-2 in those matchups with the lone victory coming in a 4-2 win, Oct. 15. They were defeated 3-1 in the SWAC Tournament Championship.
The Bruins opened the scoring in the 14
th minute on a goal from Mao Ito giving them a 1-0 lead. Both teams put up 6 shots in the first half, but the Bruin's keeper was able to turn away all five of the Badger's shots on goal. Despite the lone goal in the first half, the Badgers defense didn't allow a single SLCC corner kick.
The Badgers maintained possession for much of the second half. They broke through in the 69
th minute as
Katie Anderson sent one into the 18-yard box. The ball was deflected but found the left boot of
Saige Meryhew, who fired one past the keeper into the left corner of the net to even the score at 1 apiece.
Snow College continued to apply pressure throughout the second half. It was Wagner who put in the game-winning goal in the 78
th minute. The ball was played forward to
Madelyn McQueen, who took it all the way down the field. Just as she neared the end line, McQueen served one back toward the center of the field where Wagner was waiting near the far post. Wagner headed the ball into the back of the net from just a few yards out to give the Badgers the 2-1 lead.
The Badger's defense was able to hold strong down the stretch including a save from
Hayley Ogden in the 88
th minute. Snow College salted away the remaining time to claim the 2-1 victory.
Snow College will now turn its attention to the College of Southern Nevada. The Badgers will head to Henderson, Nevada to take on the Coyotes Saturday. Kickoff is slated for 12:00 p.m. MDT. For additional information, visit snowbadgers.com.
