Fitch's Walk-Off Homer Caps 3-1 Series vs USUE

Ayden Fitch's solo blast on the first pitch of the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the Badgers over Utah State University Eastern in the final game of a four-game series.  The win clinched the series win for the Badgers who took three of four from the Eagles for the second time this season.

Snow College entered the mid-week matchup following a convincing four-game sweep against Colorado Northwestern Community College last weekend in Pleasant Grove.  The four-game set against the Eagles was moved up in the week due to the poor weather forecasted in Ephraim.

Fitch started things in the first inning of game one with a solo homer that cleared the right-field wall to give the Badgers the early lead.  The Eagles turned the tables in the top of the second inning with a two-run blast to give them the lead.

A bases-loaded walk to force in another run extended USUE's advantage in the fourth.  The Badgers responded with two runs in the bottom of the same inning with the benefit of an error and a Moki Maughan single to even the score at 3.

The Eagles scored four runs in the sixth thanks in part to a three-run shot, giving them a 7-3 lead.  Hadlee Walker pushed across a run on a safety squeeze play in the sixth inning.  Fitch followed with a two-run homer to cut the lead to one, but the Badgers were unable to mount a comeback and dropped game one 7-6.

It was all going Snow College's way to begin game two.  Andrea Sweat blasted a homer to right field in the second and Kamryn Allen slapped a double into the right-field corner to plate two runs.  Tasia Shibuya drove in a run on a single and later scored on a Walker triple to give the Badgers a 5-0 lead after four complete innings.

USUE tallied a run on a solo homer in the fifth before the Badgers ended things via mercy rule in the sixth inning.  Fitch plated the first two on a double to centerfield before Allen ended the game on a deep home run to right which secured the 9-1 victory.

Back-to-back doubles from Shibuya and Walker plated the first run of the game for the Badgers in game three Thursday.  Walker proceeded to steal third and scored on a Fitch sacrifice fly to give Snow College a 2-0 lead.

Shibuya was at the heart of the Badgers' six-run rally in the second as she plated the first two runs on a single to center field.  Shibuya came home three batters later thanks to an error before Sweat delivered a three-run shot to give the Badgers a commanding 8-0 lead.

Snow College pushed across one more run in the third as Shibuya doubled.  Saige Ewing was nails inside the circle for the Badgers as she went five complete innings and scattered six hits en route to pitching her third complete-game shutout. Snow College won 9-0 securing their 25th win of the season, surpassing last season's win total.

Game four would prove to be an instant classic between the two rival teams.  The Eagles pushed across four unearned runs in the first inning.  The Badgers were held scoreless through the first three frames before breaking through in the fourth.

Walker started the rally with a walk and a stolen base before scoring on a Fitch single to left. Sweat was hit by a pitch and Allen singled to load the bases.  Consecutive singles from Brenley Boydston and Reata O'Neal plated two runs before the first out was recorded.

With the bases loaded, Haddie Hadley hit a ground ball to the second baseman who elected to throw home to prevent the tying run from scoring.  The throw pulled the catcher off the plate and Allen came across to even the score at four.

Things stayed quiet until Fitch stepped to the plate to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning.  She clobbered the first pitch she saw which easily cleared the wall in left-center to give the Badgers the 5-4 victory in walk-off fashion.

Fitch went 6-14 (.429/.400/1.143) from the plate with three homers, eight RBIs, and scored six runs.  Shibuya and Walker combined to go 12-27 (.444/.483/.704) at the top of the Badgers' lineup.  Ewing and Kenley Henson combined to pitch 22.2 total innings and allowed just three earned runs while striking out 12 batters.

Snow College will continue its long home stand and welcome the College of Southern Nevada to town for a four-game series.  The Coyotes are 10-24 overall this season and 5-17 within Scenic West Athletic Conference play.  They are currently riding an eight-game losing streak.  The Badgers swept the Coyotes when the two teams met in Las Vegas earlier in the season.

The four-game series is scheduled to begin Friday at 1:00 p.m. with Saturday's doubleheader slated for 12:00 p.m. at the Snow College Softball Complex in Ephraim.  For video streaming and live stat information, visit snowbadgers.com.
