The Snow College softball team has wrapped up its regular season following a four-game split against Colorado Northwestern Community College over the weekend. The Badgers finish the regular season with a 32-25 overall record and a 21-19 mark within Scenic West Athletic Conference play.
Snow College was coming off a series against No. 5 Salt Lake Community College where the Badgers suffered a four-game sweep at the hands of the Bruins. The Badgers needed just two victories against the Spartans to secure the three seed in the conference tournament.
The Badgers took an early lead in game one of the series as a CNCC defensive miscue plated two runs in the first inning. Another Spartans error scored the Badgers' third run of the game one frame later. CNCC evened the score with three runs in the second before a
Brenley Boydston RBI groundout and a
Tasia Shibuya RBI single gave the Badgers a 5-3 lead in the fourth.
McCall Maxfield singled home another run in the fifth before the Badgers exploded for seven runs in the sixth inning. Three straight singles to start the inning preceded a bases-loaded walk and a grand slam from
Hadlee Walker.
Andrea Sweat drove home the final two runs of the game with a two-run shot. The Badgers slammed the door and won 13-3 in six innings.
Snow College struck first blood again in the first inning of game two as
Kamryn Allen plated a run with a single.
Hallie Young gave the Badgers a 2-0 lead with an RBI single in the third inning before the Spartans tied it with a pair of runs in the fourth.
Maxfield led off the top of the seventh with a home run to break the tie. A walk and a double set the table for Allen. She blasted a home run over the left field wall to give the Badgers a 6-2 lead. With the homer, Allen now owns the record for home runs in a season with 19, surpassing current assistant coach
Brooke Brown, who set the record in 2018. Two runs from the Spartans in the bottom of the seventh wasn't enough and the Badgers won 6-4.
Snow College struggled offensively during a chilly game three, scoring just two runs throughout the game. The runs came on an Sweat homer in the sixth. The Badgers would go on to drop game three of the series 7-2.
The offense picked up in the final game of the series, but the Badgers couldn't outslug the Spartans. A fielding error plated a run in the first for the Badgers. CNCC responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.
Walker, Maxfield, and Sweat all plated runs in the third inning to regain the advantage for the Badgers. The wheels came off for the Badgers in the bottom of the third as they surrendered six runs in the frame.
Snow College trimmed the lead with three runs in the fourth inning. They would add two more in the sixth inning thanks to a Walker triple and a Sweat homer, but the Spartans scored a run in each of the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings and held on to the 11-9 victory.
Sweat led the Badgers offensively as she went 5-8 from the plate with three homers and seven RBIs. Walker, who finished the regular season reaching base in 36 straight games, with 8-16 with a double, two triples, a homer, and six RBIs.
The Badgers will now turn their attention to the conference tournament. They enter the bracket as a three-seed and will face off with the No. 6 (No. 2 seed) College of Southern Idaho. The Badgers went 1-7 against the Golden Eagles during the regular season.
The first game of the tournament will feature the No. 1 seed and host school SLCC, who will be taking on the No. 4 seed Utah State University Eastern Monday at 12:00 p.m. The Badgers will then meet the Golden Eagles at 2:30.
