Badgers Pick up Two Wins at Snow College Classic

The Snow College women's basketball team collected a pair of victories at the Snow College Classic last weekend in Richfield. The Badgers defeated Yavapai College 87-53 Friday before securing a 65-50 victory against former Scenic West Athletic Conference foe the College of Southern Nevada Saturday.

Both teams started out cold to begin the matchup against Yavapai. The score sat tied at four midway through the period. The shots started to fall over the final few minutes of the opening period as the Badgers used a 14-1 run over the final three minutes to take a 26-14 lead into the second quarter.

The Badgers' offense continued where it left off in the second quarter and eventually pushed the lead out to as many as 23 as Sydnee Smith scored a layup in the final seconds of the stanza. Snow College took a 47-24 lead into halftime.

Yavapai would eventually cut the deficit down to as few as 17 points, but the Badgers went on a 16-5 run over the final five minutes of the third quarter to take a commanding 67-39 lead.

A 3-pointer from Kysa Shippen pushed the lead to 31 to open up the fourth quarter. The Badgers led by as many as 35 points before locking up the 87-53 victory.

Dalana Jokovljevic and Lala Baldwin led all scorers with 14 points apiece. June Olsen finished with 12 points and five rebounds in her first game in orange and blue. Smith fell just short of a double-double as she tallied eight points and 10 rebounds.

The following day against the Coyotes, lost to Utah State University Eastern Friday, the Badgers' defense held them to just four points through the first 6 minutes of the opening period. CSN went on an 8-0 run to take a 12-10 lead.

The Coyotes would eventually lead by as many as five to open up the second quarter, but a 10-1 run from the Badgers flipped the script, and they took a 29-24 lead into halftime.

Snow College continued where it left off and scored nine of the first 10 points to start the third quarter to extend the lead to 13. CSN would trim the deficit to eight before the Badgers took a 48-36 lead into the fourth quarter.

Back-to-back jumpers from Lala Baldwin sparked a run that eventually saw the Badgers take a 61-43 lead – their largest of the game. Snow College would salt away the remaining minutes and earn the 65-50 victory.

Baldwin finished with 12 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Jakovljevic put in 11 points while Smith added 10 points and five rebounds to aid in the victory.

The Badgers will now head to Thatcher, Arizona, to participate in the Gila Monsters
Tournament hosted by Eastern Arizona College. Snow College will begin the three-day event against Cochise College Thursday at 2:00 p.m. They'll take on the No. 3 Gila Monsters Friday at 6:00 p.m. before wrapping up the tournament in a rematch against Yavapai Saturday at 1:30 p.m. For video streaming and live stats information, visit snowbadgers.com.
