Badgers Take One of Four From No. 16 SLCC

The Snow College softball team won one game in a four-game series against No. 16 Salt Lake Community College over the weekend in Ephraim. The Badgers earned a 5-4 victory in the final game of the series to avoid the sweep.

The Badgers entered the series after going 1-3 against the College of Southern Idaho. They sit in third place within the Scenic West Athletic Conference, one game ahead of North Idaho College.

SLCC wasted no time getting on the board in game one, scoring with a leadoff home run to take a 1-0 lead. The Badgers struggled to generate momentum at the plate, managing only a handful of baserunners in the early innings. SLCC continued to apply pressure, extending their lead with four runs in the second inning.

The Bruins put up five more runs in the fourth inning to increase the lead to 10-0. Snow College wouldn't be shut out, however, as Madison Salisbury hit her first home run of the season to drive home Moki Maughan, but SLCC would take game one, 10-2.

The Bruins controlled game two and shut out the Badgers for just the second time this season. SLCC scored nine runs over the first five innings to claim the victory.

Snow College struck first in game three of the series as Hailey Mangum launched one over the right-centerfield wall to give the Badgers a 1-0 lead in the third inning. SLCC tied it up with a home run in the fourth before taking a 2-1 lead entering the bottom of the fifth.

A double from Brooke Fisher in the bottom of the fifth scored Gracie Brooks and tied the game at two apiece. SLCC responded with three runs over the next two innings and the Badgers suffered the 5-2 loss.

Snow College came out firing, jumping to a 4-0 lead in the first inning of game four. Singles from Ayden Fitch, Kamryn Allen, Taimane Laolagi-Aloy, and Maughan all produced runs, to give the Badgers the early lead.

Laolagi-Aloy was stellar in the circle, working four scoreless innings before SLCC finally got on the board. SLCC did manage to push across a lone run in the fifth, but the Badgers got the tally right back on an RBI single from Mangum to take a 5-1 lead into the seventh.

SLCC threatened to tie the game in the seventh after an RBI single and a two-run homer trimmed the lead to just one. Avery Thorkelson slammed the door to earn the save, giving the Badgers a 5-4 victory.

Allen led the way for the Badgers offensively as she went 4-8 (.500/.636/.500) from the plate with three walks and an RBI. Maughan went 3-8 (.375/.500/.375) with a pair of walks and drove in a run.

Snow College will now head to Price to take on Utah State University Eastern in a four-game series beginning April 4. The Badgers took three of four from the Eagles in their previous matchup earlier this year. The Eagles are 6-19 overall and 2-14 within SWAC play. Friday's doubleheader begins at 1:00 p.m. with Saturday's twin bill scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m. For video streaming and live stat information, visit snowbadgers.com.
