Badgers Split Conference Opener Against NIC

The Snow College softball team kicked off conference play on the road in Worley, Idaho, against North Idaho College, splitting the series, winning games one and four 14-8 and 9-4, respectively.

The Badgers are coming off their final non-conference tournament of the year at the Lander Jamboree in Waco, Texas. They won a pair of games at the jamboree against Alvin Community College.

Game one of the four-game set started as a back-and-forth bout. Gigi Hall got the scoring started early for the Badgers with a two-run homer to center field in the top of the first before NIC responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. Both sides pushed runs across in the third for a slight NIC 4-3 lead.

The Cardinals expanded their lead in the bottom of the fourth with a three-run homer. In the top of the fifth, the Badgers pieced together six hits and a sacrifice bunt to bring NIC's lead to 7-6 before Nev Carrasquel hit the Badgers' first grand slam of the season to left field to put the Badgers out front 10-7. They added four more runs in the top of the sixth and seventh to ensure the victory, 14-8.

The Badgers opened game two similarly to game one, as Hall blasted another two-run homer to center field in the top of the third. NIC countered with two runs on its own home run and an additional run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Brooke Fisher tied the game 3-3 in the top of the fifth with a line drive to left that scored Grace Thomas. The Cardinals knocked in four more runs over the course of the game while holding the Badgers to a lone run, which came in the top of the seventh off a Fisher home run to left, closing the game 7-4.

The Badgers struck first in game three with Chloe Tycksen getting on with a lead-off single before stealing both second and third before being driven in by Fisher's double. Taimane Laolagi-Aloy drove Fisher in on a hard hit ball to left field two at-bats later. NIC responded with two home runs in the bottom of the first to get out to a 5-3 lead.

The Badgers tied the game in the top of the third off a Fisher home run to left that scored two. NIC went on a run to expand its lead to 10-5 by the end of the fourth. Snow College attempted to rally but fell short 11-9 to lose game three.

The Badgers found themselves on the board first in the final game off a Thomas solo big fly to left field in the top of the second. The Cardinals answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. The Badgers regained the lead in the top of the fifth on Hall's third two-run homer of the series for the 3-2 lead. NIC had its own home run that brought the lead back into its grasp in the bottom of the fifth.

The Badgers' offense sparked in the top of the seventh as Hall hit her second big fly of the game to tie the score at four. They continued to apply pressure as Tycksen reached base on an error by the NIC third baseman and advanced on the throw, while Fisher rounded the basepaths.

Thomas followed it up with her second homer of the day to drive Tycksen and bring the score to 7-4. The Badgers added two more runs off a Rian Howland walk and a pair of doubles from Claire Yates and Madison Salisbury to close the game 9-4.
