The Snow College softball team earned two victories at the Lander Jamboree hosted by No. 9 McLennan Community College in Waco, Texas, last weekend. The Badgers' two victories came against Alvin Community College, 5-4 and 10-7.
The Badgers are coming off the Northwest Florida State Invitational, where they won one of the four games they played against Louisburg College, 12-2.
The Badgers opened the jamboree against the host school, MCC, with a lead-off single from
Gigi Hall.
Taimane Laolagi-Aloy drove her in a couple of batters later with a double to left field to give the Badgers an early 1-0 lead by the end of the top of the first.
MCC responded in the bottom of the first with a two-run home run. The Badgers struggled to find any offense after the first, and MCC won the first game of the doubleheader 9-1.
The Badgers' offensive woes continued into the second game of the doubleheader as MCC was able to bolt out to a 7-0 lead by the end of the fourth inning. They were able to find some production in the top of the fifth as a trio of singles from
Chely Deleon,
Avery Thorkelson, and Hall gave them their only run of the game. The Highlanders added two additional runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth to close the second game 9-1.
The start of day two had the Badgers finish their three-game set against MCC. The Highlanders got out to an early 3-0 lead by the end of the second inning and tacked on two more in the bottom of the fifth.
The Badgers found some offense at the top of the seventh as Deleon singled to open the inning, followed by a pair of Thorkelson and
Brynlee Riedle walks to load the bases with no outs.
Madison Salisbury drove the first run in with a single to left, and Hall was the first out as she popped out to the MCC pitcher.
Chloe Tycksen drove in another on a ground ball to second that left the Badgers with runners on second and third with two outs.
Brooke Fisher flew out to center field to end the game 5-2 in MCC's favor.
The Badgers wrapped day two against ACC, where they kicked off the scoring early in the bottom of the first as Tycksen was able to get on base with a single to the shortstop before
Loreal Gonzalez hit a line drive double to center field to score Tycksen. The Dolphins responded in the top of the second with two runs of their own.
Snow College regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth as
Grace Thomas and Thorkelson both got on base with singles before a single from
Rian Howland scored Thomas.
Both Thorkelson and Howland were able to steal third and second base, respectively, on the next at-bat from Deleon before an error by the right fielder scored Thorkelson and left runners on second and third.
They added one more run with a Salisbury hit to the shortstop that scored Thorkelson, giving the Badgers a 4-2 lead at the end of the fourth inning.
ACC tied the game back up in the top of the sixth off a single and an error. The Badgers weren't able to find anything in the bottom of the sixth. Still, in the bottom of the seventh, Salisbury singled to the shortstop to get on base as Fisher would blast a line drive to center field that allowed Salisbury to round the bases and score the winning run, 5-4.
The Badgers kicked off the final day of the Lander Jamboree against No. 25 Hutchinson Community College. The Badgers struck first against HCC in the top of the first as Hall and Thorkelson were both able to get on base, then steal third and second, respectively. Gonzalez flew out to the shortstop and gave Hall enough time to score the first run of the game.
The Blue Dragons responded in the bottom of the first with four runs and added three in the bottom of the second to go up 7-1 early. The Badgers' offense went quiet until the top of the sixth, where they created two runs off a Hall single that was eventually driven in by a Gonzalez double to right field. Deleon knocked in Gonzalez with a hard hit single to center field. HCC would put the game out of reach with a run in the bottom of the sixth and closed out the game 8-3.
The Badgers closed the jamboree against ACC hot, as Fisher hit a lead-off home run to left field. Laolagi-Aloy and Thomas both hit singles before Deleon drove them both in on a triple to center.
In the top of the second, the Badgers' offense kept firing as
Zeyda Olvera had a lead-off walk before a Fisher triple to center scored her. Fisher herself made it home on a Hall single to the third baseman. Hall eventually scored on a Laolagi-Aloy single to left, bringing the Badgers' lead to 6-0 by the end of the second.
They added one more in the top of the third as
Nev Carrasquel got on base with a single to the pitcher. She reached home base a couple of at-bats later on a Tycksen single to left field. ACC responded in the bottom of the third with a six-run inning to cut the Badgers' lead to 7-6. The Dolphins tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth.
The Badgers regained the lead in the top of the sixth as Fisher hit her second triple of the day before Hall drove her in on a sacrifice fly to center.
In the top of the seventh, the Badgers capped off the scoring after the first two batters got out. Deleon hit a single to center, and Carrasquel scored her with the Badgers' fourth triple of the game. Olvera drove Carrasquel in with a single to left field, pushing the lead to 10-7 and earning their second victory of the jamboree.
Deleon led the Badgers' offense statistically as she went 6-15 from the plate with a triple. Fisher also contributed to the Badgers' offense, going 7-21 from the plate with a double, three triples, and the Badgers' sole home run of the weekend.
