Box Score 2 EPHRAIM — The Snow College volleyball team made the tough Idaho road trip last week, losing to both North Idaho College (NIC) on Thursday and College of Southern Idaho (CSI) on Saturday. Combined with a loss to Salt Lake Community College the week before, the 13th ranked Badgers have stumbled out of the gate in Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) play, starting off 0-3 and dropping to 12-7 overall.
The Badgers started strong on Thursday in Coeur d'Alene, beating the 16th ranked Cardinals of North Idaho, 25-21 and 25-23, in the first two sets. But the Cardinals stormed back to take the last three sets, 25-16, 25-20, 15-10, to hand the Badgers a disappointing loss.
North Idaho was on its game, recording double-digit kills in each set, and finishing with 60 kills in the match to only 39 for Snow. The Cardinals' defense was also strong with 74 digs to only 50 for the Badgers.
Madi Packard had 10 kills to lead the Badgers while
Delayne Daniels had 15 digs. Leeta Grap led NIC with 17 kills.
On Saturday, the Badgers took on the fourth ranked Southern Idaho Golden Eagles in Twin Falls. Snow had beaten CSI during the preseason, but the Golden Eagles cranked it up for league play, beating the Badgers 25-18, 28-26, 21-25, 25-20.
"The good news is we played well against CSI and appear to have emerged from our slump," said Snow head coach Keven John. "Either team could have won that match."
Packard again led the Badgers in kills with 14 while
Brenna DeYoung added 12 and
Erika Kelly had nine. Daniels recorded 16 digs and Packard added 12. Mercedes Vaughn led CSI with 14 kills.
"If we continue to play the way we did on Saturday, good things will happen the rest of the way," Coach John said. "Despite the bad conference start, we are still very hopeful for the season."
Eighth ranked Salt Lake was also in Idaho last week, beating CSI on Thursday and North Idaho on Saturday, both by scores of 3-1, to grab first place in the SWAC. The Badgers return home this week, hosting Colorado Northwestern on Friday and USU-Eastern on Saturday.
