Box Score EPHRAIM, Utah – The eighth ranked Snow College Badgers beat fifth ranked Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) in Scenic West Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon. Snow came back from down two sets to one to claim the exciting five-set match, 25-18, 20-25, 21-25, 25-19, 15-7. The win pulls Snow into a second place tie with SLCC and avenges a sweep the Bruins had over the Badgers on Sept. 27 in Salt Lake.
Snow took the first set easily with a .357 hitting percentage to only .054 for SLCC. The Bruins turned things around in the second and third sets, however, recording a match-high 16 kills as a team in the second set for a .444 percentage.
But with the score tied at 10 in the fourth set, Snow started to pull away and never looked back, taking the fourth 25-19 and running away from the Bruins 15-7 in the finale. Leading 7-4 in the final set, Snow's
Cortney Swindlehurst served for five straight points, including a trio of kills by sophomore
Delayne Daniel, to put the match out of reach.
"We hit well," said Snow head coach Craig Choate. The Badgers finished with a hitting percentage of .248 to .206 for the Bruins. "We played at the level today that Salt Lake and CSI always play at. That was a hurdle we had to get over, and I think we got over that hurdle today," Choate said.
Daniel, who came into the match leading the nation with an average of 4.60 kills per set, led all players with 22 kills. Her teammate
Brooke Lamb had 12 kills. Salt Lake's Carol Grasso finished with 20 kills, with Kallie Schmit adding 13 kills and Jessica Quayle chipping in 11. Snow's
Savannah Whitworth and Salt Lake's Brighton Taylor each had six blocks. As a team, Snow had only five service errors to 14 for the Bruins.
Snow's win gives league leading and No. 3 ranked Southern Idaho (CSI) some breathing room at 6-0, two games ahead of Snow and Salt Lake who are each 4-2. Snow plays at CSI this week on Thursday and SLCC follows the Badgers into Twin Falls on Saturday.
