Box Score EPHRAIM – The Snow College Badgers had a tough time putting the ball in the hoop as they lost an important match up with Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) on Saturday by a score of 69-64. Neither team shot well from the field or the line, but the SLCC Bruins were just enough better to earn the win and a solid grasp on second place in the Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) men's basketball standings.
Snow made only nine of 29 shots (31 percent) from the field in the first half, including an anemic one for nine from 3-point range, as the Bruins built a 32-22 lead at halftime. The Bruins meanwhile were 14 for 29 on field goals (48 percent) and four for seven on three's in the opening period. However, the visitors missed all three of their shots from free throw line, with the Badgers a bit better going three for six.
After SLCC's De'Sean Parsons opened the second half with a basket, Snow went on a 12-0 run to tie the game at 34. The Bruins helped the Badgers' comeback by missing five more free throws during the Badger run.Â
Snow sophomore
Larenz Stalcup scored six of the Badger points during the run along with blocking a shot and grabbing four rebounds. Stalcup went to the bench with nine minutes left in the hard-fought game with a bloody mouth earned battling for position under the basket. He would not return until there were less than two minutes remaining.
With five minutes to go and Snow down by only one at 52-51, SLCC staged an 8-0 run over the next two minutes fueled by three field goals from Marcus White. The Badgers never again got closer than the five-point margin at the end of the game. Snow got off only three shots during the Bruin run, all from behind the 3-point arc with all three missing the mark.
Snow guard
Walter Wright led all scorers with a game-high 23 points while grabbing six rebounds and handing out four assists.
Gentrey Thomas, who also spent several minutes late in the game on the Snow bench with a bloody nose, scored 15 points and Stalcup finished with a team-high 10 rebounds. The Badgers finished 26 for 67 from the floor (39 percent) including four for 21 (19 percent) on 3-pointers. The Badgers' shooting woes continued at the free throw line where they were eight for 15 (53 percent).
SLCC had three players score 12 points – White, Brandon Morley and Blake Wilkinson who also pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds. The Bruins finished 25 for 59 from the field (42 percent) with five for 14 (36 percent) on three's and, after missing their first eight free throws of the game, they ended up 14 for 27 (52 percent) from the line.
With the win SLCC stays one game behind undefeated Southern Idaho in the SWAC standings at 7-1. Snow, which heads to Idaho this week, is now 5-3 in the SWAC and 16-7 overall.
