Box Score 4 EPHRAIM -- The Snow Badger softball team had a tough weekend hosting the second-ranked Bruins of Salt Lake Community College (SLCC), losing four times as the Bruins won Friday's doubleheader, 7-0 and 13-1, and then repeating Saturday's opener with another 13-1 loss before the Bruins scored three times in the last inning to steal the series finale 6-4. The losses leave Snow at 7-17 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference with SLCC at 20-4 and holding onto a half-game lead over second place College of Southern Idaho.Â
The Badgers could muster no offense through the first three games of the series, scoring a combined two runs on only eight hits.
Shaylee Larsen,
Mariah Peterson and
Karlee Manzione were the only Badgers with multiple hits through the first three games, with Peterson and Manzione each recording a double and a single.Â
Meanwhile, the meat of the SLCC order pounded the ball in the first three games with clean-up hitter Kyrae Kogianes going a combined five-for-eight at the plate with two homers, a triple and a double along with six RBI and scoring eight runs herself.Â
Saturday's finale, however, was a classic back-and-forth battle. SLCC scored twice in the top of the first on a pair of singles to take an early lead. Snow scored in the bottom of the second as
Emily Adams tripled for the Badgers to drive in Manzione who had doubled.Â
Snow took its first lead of the series in the third when
Kenzie Rasmussen tied the score at two with a sacrifice fly to center scoring
Cassidy Anderson who had singled and gone to third on
Mariah Peterson's second double of the series. Peterson then scampered home with Snow's third run as Manzione singled up the middle.
The Badgers added an insurance run in the fifth on another single up the middle by Manzione which drove in
Emily Street to put Snow ahead 4-2. The Bruins tightened it up in the top of the sixth on a sac-fly by Ashlee Crabtree which scored Payton Hart who had opened the inning with a double.Â
Snow had a chance to extend its lead in the sixth when
Kayla Larson and
Cassidy Anderson walked to open the inning. Manzione later walked with two outs to load the bases, but the Badgers could not bring a run across, leaving the score at 4-3 heading into the last inning.
In the seventh inning the Bruins got a runner to third with one out, but she was picked off by the Badgers on a botched squeeze play to leave the bases empty with two outs and Snow up by a run. Sophomore hurler
Belle Stoddard, who held the Bruins to their lowest output of the series, got two strikes on the next batter, Riana Splinter, but just missed the outside corner twice before finally walking her. That started a two-out rally as the Bruins brought home three runs on three hits, highlighted by a pinch hit triple by Chelsa Baca, to take a 6-4 lead.
Again Snow got runners on first and second with no outs as Adams and
Shaylee Larsen opened the bottom of the seventh with singles. Following a pop up and a ground out,
Cassidy Anderson walked to load the bases with two outs and the tying runs in scoring position, but another pop up ended the Badger hopes and Salt Lake left town with the 6-4 win and series sweep.
The Badgers now head to Henderson this week to take on the third place Coyotes of the College of Southern Nevada and then travel to Twin Falls the following week to take on second place, and fourth-ranked, College of Southern Idaho.
