Box Score 4 EPHRAIM -- The season came to an end for the Snow College softball team with losses to Western Nevada and Southern Nevada in the Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) tournament played at Salt Lake Community College in Taylorsville. The Badgers lost 6-5 to Western Nevada (WNC) in eight innings Thursday morning, and then were knocked out of the double elimination tournament Friday afternoon when they lost 7-0 to Southern Nevada (CSN). The Badgers finished the season in fifth place in the SWAC with a record of 16-28.
The long ball was the only offense working for Snow against WNC, with all five Badger runs coming on a trio of round trippers. Badger slugger Karlee Manzione hit a pair of two-run homers, in the fourth and sixth innings, the second one giving the Badgers their first lead of the game at 4-3. After WNC tied the score with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth, Mariah Peterson put the Badgers back on top with a solo homer in the top of the seventh.
Snow just could not close out the Wildcats in the bottom of the seventh, however, as WNC's Briauna Carter singled up the middle to score Pamela Sakuma with two outs to send the game into extra innings. The Wildcats struck again with two outs in the bottom of the eighth when Melanie Mecham singled to left field to score Kaylee Jaussi from second base for the win.
Peterson had a single to go with her homerun, and along with Manzione's two dingers, Emily Street singled in the sixth and scored on Manzione's second blast for Snow's only other hit in the game. Jaussi, Mecham, Carter and Kacie Freudenberger each had a pair of hits for WNC. Manzione, who led the SWAC in batting with a final average of .458, moved into second place in the league in homeruns with 11.
Freshman Riley Cleverly started in the circle for Snow and was relieved in the fourth by Riley Cox who was saddled with the loss. Brooke Davis caught for the Badgers.
On Friday the Badgers could manage only singles as CSN's Kristina Nelson shut them out on six hits with no walks. Street and Renee Fagg each had a pair of singles for Snow, with Manzione and Megan Hansen getting the other Badger hits.
Catcher Rebeka Gross was all the Coyotes needed as she smacked a pair of homeruns and added a single to drive in six runs. Sophomore hurler Belle Stoddard pitched the first four innings for Snow and took the loss. Cleverly came on in relief in the fifth and Fagg was behind the plate for Snow.
Rain wiped out Saturday's championship game, but top-ranked Salt Lake Community College will move on to play in the NJCAA National Tournament this weekend in St. George by virtue of winning the regular season.
