Box Score EPHRAIM , Utah (March 23, 2019) -- The Snow College women's softball team won the opener of a four-game series this weekend against Salt Lake Community College; however, the Bruins came back to win the three remaining contests to stay atop the Scenic West Athletic Conference softball standings. Snow won the opener in a 6-5 walk-off, but SLCC took Friday's nightcap 9-6 and then won Saturday's doubleheader by scores of 7-5 and 14-3.
The 9th ranked Bruins built a 4-0 lead in the opener on Friday before the Badgers'
Madi Rouska brought home
Autumn Dzierzon on a sacrifice fly for Snow's first run in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Bruins got the run right back in the top of the sixth on a double by Mallory Barber, but Snow came roaring back in the bottom of the inning with three runs to cut the Bruins' lead to one at 5-4. Rouska had the big hit in the inning with a triple to right field.
After Badger hurler
Alexis Poulsen shut down SLCC in the top of the seventh, Shields delivered a two-out double over the left fielder's head to score
Avery Reynolds from second and
Katie Tanner all the way from first to claim the walk-off 6-5 win.
Other than Barber, who finished with a double and a homerun, Poulsen was masterful keeping the powerful Bruin lineup off balance. Poulsen earned the complete game win, her fifth of the season, by holding the rest of the Bruin lineup to nine singles with a mixture of hard sliders and dazzling change-ups which she threw for called strikes time after time. Rouska finished the game with two RBI while Shields was 2-for-4 at the plate and drove in three runs for Snow.
Shields finished 5-for-12 at the plate in the series with four RBI, a double and a homerun. Reynolds also went 5-for-12 for Snow with a homer, and Rouska was 4-for-10 with four RBI and a pair of triples.
Brooke Brown, who signed a letter of intent between Saturday's games to play next year for Southern Utah University, finished the series with a hit in each game, going 4-for-13 with a double and a homerun.
SLCC is in first place in the SWAC with a record of 13-3, with Southern Idaho a game back at 12-4. Snow sits in third place at 5-6, while Southern Nevada is 5-7. Utah State Eastern stands in fifth place at 2-9 and Colorado Northwestern is 2-10. The Badgers are scheduled to host Colorado Northwestern this coming weekend, followed by Utah State Eastern the following week.
