RICHFIELD, Utah (April 2, 2021) -- The top-seeded Snow College women's volleyball team overcame a 14-10 deficit in game five against Southern Idaho on Friday. With the come-from-behind victory, the Badgers now advance to the Region XVIII Championship match on Saturday against Utah State Eastern. Saturday's game will mark the third region championship match for the Badgers in the past four years, and will be a repeat of last year's championship match between both Snow and USUE.
The Golden Eagles were serving for match point with a 14-10 lead in game five when the 2020-21 Region XVIII Player of the Year,
Lydia Montague, put down a decisive kill just past the three-meter line to give serve back to the Badgers. Sophomore
Camden Strain went on to serve and lead Snow College on a 6-0 run. Sophomore First-Team All-Region performer
Bridgett Talia dropped a roll shot in CSI territory to complete the comeback, and give the Badgers the 16-14 win in the fifth and final set.
"I'm not sure I've seen anything quite like that," Snow College head coach Jeff Reynolds said. "Usually when teams are down by six points in the fifth set -- especially when the other team in serving for match point -- an assistant coach or team manager will text the bus driver and tell him to get the bus warmed up. But after Lydia's monster kill, the momentum shifted and with Cam's serving, this team did not give up. Cam served for six straight points -- that's incredible."
Montague led the Badgers with a match-high 19 kills on 42 attempts to hit .381 on the night. The 6-1 middle blocker also added two aces, seven digs and five blocks for good measure. Talia added 16 kills on 39 attempts to hit .205 on the night. She also added 17 digs and three blocks. Freshman
Macie Gordon dropped in 12 kills for the Badgers, while sophomore
Jentry Ison had a team-best 22 digs.
Macy Short picked up yet another double-double on the season with a match-high 51 assists and 11 digs. Both Strain and Talia had 17 digs each in the win.
The third-ranked Badgers will now take on No. 4 USU Eastern on Saturday in the Region XVIII Championship match, beginning at 1 p.m. The two teams met in the championship last season with Snow claiming a 3-2 win. The two teams have played three times this season, with the Eagles holding a 2-1 advantage. Snow beat USUE the last time the two teams met, 3-2.
"Our two teams have been on a collision course all season," Reynolds said. "It's probably no surprise these two teams will be battling it out for the tournament championship. As the No. 3 and No. 4 teams in the nation, this will be the feature match in the nation this weekend. It's going to be an amazing match."
