WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS: The Snow College and Scenic West Athletic Conference Regular Season Champion women's soccer team takes on Truckee Meadows Community College Thursday in the first round of the NJCAA Region 18 Conference Tournament.
The No. 1 seeded Badgers are coming off a 3-0 victory in their last game of the regular season against Utah State University Eastern last Thursday. While the Badgers were idle Saturday, the Eagles defeated Salt Lake Community College 2-1 which gave the Bruins their second conference loss of the season.
With a record of 9-1-1 in SWAC play, the Badgers were awarded the regular season title for the second year in a row and will enter the conference tournament as the top seed. SLCC, USUE, and TMCC round out the other four teams that made the conference tournament. Snow College owns a 4-1-1 combined record over these teams during the 2022 regular season.
The Badgers finished the season on a nine-game winning streak and have not lost a home regular season match in over three full seasons. Snow College has won 20 straight regular season home games dating back to 2019.
BY THE NUMBERS: The Badgers scored 86 total goals this season – good for fourth in the country – for an average of 6.1 goals per game – good for second in the nation. They scored double-digit goals in three goals this season including an 18-goal outburst against the College of Southern Nevada Oct. 6.
Defensively, the Badgers only allowed nine goals all season, which was tied for sixth-best in the nation. McKenna Conley turned away 84 percent of shots on goal this season. She saved a total of 48 shots for the Badgers.
KNOW YOUR FOE: Snow College and TMCC faced off twice this season. The Badgers did not lose either of those games going 1-0-1 in the two matches. The first matchup of the season resulted in a 2-2 draw in Reno, NV September 3. The Badgers defeated the Lizards 3-1 when they saw them again in Ephraim Oct. 8.
TMCC owns a regular season record of 7-4-2 overall and a conference record of 5-4-2. The Lizards are 2-2-1 over their final five matches of the regular season with losses to Snow College and SLCC. They finished the regular season with a 3-0 over Colorado Northwestern Community College.
The Badgers have not lost a match to TMCC dating back to 2019. They are 7-0-1 against the Lizards in that time frame. Snow College will look to continue its winning ways Thursday at 11:00 a.m. inside Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman, UT.
LAST TIME OUT: The Snow College women's soccer team capped off the regular season win a 3-0 victory over Utah State University Eastern Thursday in Ephraim. The win ensures the Badgers can finish no worse than second within the Scenic West Athletic Conference standings.
The Badgers played aggressively in the first half but were unable to gain an advantage. They put up ten shots in the opening 45 minutes, with four shots on goal, but did not score. Defensively they only allowed two Eagle shots, but keeper McKenna Conley turned away both.
Snow College broke the tie in the 68
th minute.
Candela Gonzalez served it in from the corner and
Skye Kennedy finished it off giving the Badgers a 1-0 lead.
The Badgers added another goal in the 77
th minute as
Madelyn McQueen fired a shot past the keeper from 10-yards out. Kennedy and
Fiona Jensen combined for the assist.
Snow College would add an insurance goal in the 87
th minute.
Laila Spring fed a pass to
Monica Garcia who fired toward the goal. The keeper dove to try and stop the shot, but the ball deflected off her hands and had enough momentum to find the back of the net, giving the Badgers a 3-0 lead that they would maintain through the final whistle.
The Badgers finished the game with 22 total shots – half of which were on goal while limiting the Eagles to 8 total shots in the match.
Snow College finishes the season with an overall record of 12-1-1 and 9-1-1 within the SWAC including a perfect 8-0 record at home.
UP NEXT: If Snow College can defeat TMCC, it will turn around and face the winner of the SLCC/USUE matchup. The winner of that matchup will play for the Region 18 Tournament Title and a guaranteed spot in the NJCAA National Tournament.
