No. 1 Badgers Finish Regular Season vs CSI, NIC

GAME NOTES: The Snow College men's basketball team will begin its final home stand of the season and take on the College of Southern Idaho Thursday at 7:00 p.m. The Badgers will then conclude the regular season against North Idaho College Saturday at 3:00 p.m. inside the Horne Activity Center.

Snow College extended its winning streak to 20 consecutive games after defeating Colorado Northwestern Community College (94-71), and Salt Lake Community College (84-70) last weekend during the final road trip of the year.

As a result of the two wins over the weekend, Chance Trujillo (Fr./Kaysville, Utah/Davis HS) was named the Scenic West Athletic Conference Player of the Week. Trujillo becomes the sixth different member of the team and 11th overall to win the award this season.

Trujillo averaged 18.5 points and four rebounds between the two victories. He scored 20 points in the Badgers victory against the Spartans. Over the two games, Trujillo shot 60 percent from the field and 59 percent from beyond the arc. Trujillo's .454 3-point percentage leads the team.

The Badgers shot 53 percent from the field and 47 percent from distance in their victory against the Bruins. This is the 17th game this season Snow College has shot at least 50 percent from the field. They are currently fourth overall in the nation at field-goal percentage at nearly 52 percent. The Badgers are also sixth in 3-point percentage at 39.1 percent.

Snow College has won 13 games in conference play, tying a program record for most conference wins in a season. The Badgers have won 13 conference games twice before, most recently during the 2021-22 season. They went 13-5 and finished second in the conference standings.

CSI owns a 20-8 overall record and an 8-5 mark within conference play and has lost three of its last four games. The Badgers have won both games they have played this season against the Golden Eagles, including a 110-78 win in Ephraim Jan. 18 and a 93-89 victory Jan. 30 in Twin Falls.

NIC is 17-11 overall and 7-6 within the SWAC. The Badgers will look to sweep the season series against the Cardinals, who enter the weekend having won four games in a row and six of their last seven. Snow College defeated NIC 88-81 Jan. 16 and 99-87 Feb. 1.

LAST TIME OUT: The No. 1 Snow College men's basketball team made more history over the weekend as the Badgers defeated Colorado Northwestern Community College and Salt Lake Community College. With the victories, the Badgers have now won 20 straight games dating back to before Thanksgiving.

Snow College entered the weekend having defeated Utah State University Eastern Feb. 13. The win, the Badgers' 18th straight, tied the single-season record for consecutive victories matching the mark set during the 1978-79 season.

CNCC got off to a quick start and scored the first six points of the game to gain the early advantage. The Badgers then used a 9-2 run to quickly turn the tables and take the lead five minutes into action. Over the next seven minutes, the Spartans tightened the screws on the Badgers to take their largest lead of the game.

The Spartans outscored the Badgers 15-6 to take a 23-15 lead with under eight minutes to play in the first half.  Snow College responded and began to torch the nets inside Hefley Gymnasium. Over the final eight minutes, the Badgers went 9-15 from the field and 5-7 from beyond the arc.

Chance Trujillo (Fr./Kaysville, Utah/Davis HS) shouldered most of the load as he hit 3-pointers on three straight possessions to give the Badgers a 38-34 lead. In total, Trujillo scored 13 first-half points as the Badgers took a 43-40 lead into the break.

Snow College picked up where it left off to begin the second half. Isaac Garrett (So./Pleasant Grove, Utah/Pleasant Grove HS) scored six points in the first two minutes followed by another triple from Trujillo to cap a 9-0 run to start the period.
The offense continued to shine over the remaining minutes of the second half.  In total, the Badgers scored 51 second-half points, all while not shooting a single free throw. They shot 51 percent from the field and 47 percent from deep as they cruised to a 94-71 victory.

Garrett led all scorers with 23 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists. Trujillo poured in 20 points on 6-9 shooting. Isaac Finlinson (So./St. George, Utah/Dixie HS) added 13 points and 9 rebounds while Coleman Ford (So./Provo, Utah/Timpview HS) put in 10 points to aid in the win.

Following the victory, the Badgers headed north to take on SLCC for the third time this season. The Bruins started strong and took a 21-12 lead seven minutes into the game. The Badgers responded with an 11-0 run capped off by five points from McCaden Adams (Fr./Pleasant Grove, Utah/Pleasant Grove HS) to take a 23-21 lead.

Back-to-back 3-pointers from Mark Brown Jr. (So./South Phoenix, Arizona/Bella Vista Prep) and Trujillo gave the Badgers a 32-26 lead, their largest advantage of the first half.  SLCC responded and outscored Snow College 15-9 over the final nine minutes to tie things at 41 entering intermission.

The scoring stalled over the first six minutes of the second half when the Badgers' offense came to life. Over the next 10 minutes, Snow College went 10-12 (.833) from the field and 3-4 (.750) from deep. Kyle Lemke (Fr./St. George, Utah/Dixie HS) outscored the entire Bruins roster over that stretch.

Coupled with the scorching offense, the Badgers' defense flexed its muscles. Snow College allowed just 12 points over the first 14 minutes of the second half and held a 70-53 lead with just over six minutes to play. Snow College stretched the lead out to as many as 19 points before earning the 84-70 victory.

Trujillo paced the Badgers offensively as he scored 17 points on 6-11/4-8 shooting. Finlinson and Lemke each scored 15 points, while Adams flirted with a double-double as he finished with 12 points and 9 rebounds. Ford added 12 points in the record-setting win.

UP NEXT: Snow College will host SLCC in the first round of the Region 18 Tournament. The tournament will begin Friday, March 7, as CSI takes on NIC at 5:00 p.m. The Badgers will then meet the Bruins at 7:30 p.m. The winners from each game will meet in the championship, which will take place Saturday March 8, at 3:00 p.m. All games will be played inside the Horne Activity Center in Ephraim.
