Softball Takes on Cardinals In Conference Road Debut

GAME NOTES: The Snow College softball team will head to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and take on North Idaho College in a four-game series beginning Friday at 2:00 p.m. MST. The final two games of the series will take place Saturday at 1:00 p.m. MST.

The Badgers are coming off the opening weekend of Scenic West Athletic Conference play where they took three out of four games from Utah State University last weekend in Ephraim.

Snow College will take on NIC for the first time since the 2014 season as the Cardinals have returned to the SWAC after being a member of the Northwest Athletic Conference for the last decade.

Ayden Fitch led the Badgers offensively over the weekend as she went 7-12 (.583/.667/1.250) while hitting two homers and driving in nine runs. She reached base a total of 10 times while not striking out and scoring seven runs.

The Badgers are 20-21 all time against NIC but are just 2-8 against the Cardinals over their last 10 games. The Cardinals are 8-10 overall this season and 0-4 within conference play after being swept last weekend by the College of Southern Idaho.

RECORD WATCH: Kamryn Allen has hit two home runs so far during the 2025 season. After hitting 20 home runs in 2024, which set the school record for homers in a season, she needs just six more big flies to break the program record for home runs in a career. Alyssa Arslanian set the mark as she hit 27 homers during the 2016 and 2017 seasons.

LAST TIME OUT: The Snow College softball team picked up three victories against Utah State University Eastern last weekend in Ephraim. All three victories against the Eagles came via the mercy rule as the Badgers improved to 8-11 overall to begin the 2025 season.

The Badgers entered play after splitting their final weekend of non-conference play at the Choccolocco Park Extravaganza in Oxford, Alabama. Snow College defeated Pensacola State College 5-4 before defeating Indian Hills Community College 9-7 to wrap up the tournament.

Things started a little rocky for the Badgers in their home opener as the Eagles put up a pair of runs in the first inning. They added a run in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead through two innings of play.

The bats came alive for Snow College in the third inning. Nev Carrasquel started the inning with a walk and eventually reached second after a sacrifice bunt from Avery Thorkelson. After Molly Roberts reached on a fielder's choice, Mangum singled to right field to score the first run of the game for the Badgers.

Reata O'Neal singled to score Roberts before Kamryn Allen walked to load up the bases. Three straight singles from Brenley Boydston, Ayden Fitch, and Moki Maughan plated four more runs for the Badgers who took a 6-3 lead into the fourth inning.

USUE trimmed the deficit slightly with a single tally in the top of the fourth inning. Snow College put the game to rest with eight runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.  It started and ended with Fitch. She led off the inning with a double and Maughan followed suit with a double of her own to score Fitch.

A walk and a hit batter loaded the bases before Mangum singled to left to score a run, and the Badgers led 8-4. A fielder's choice and a throwing error scored two more runs. Allen walked and Boydston singled to load the bases for the second time in the inning. Fitch stepped to the plate and blasted a grand slam to dead centerfield to end the game, 14-4.

Game two of the series did not go the Badgers' way as they suffered a 9-7 loss. The offense that scored a season-high 14 runs in game one was held quiet through the first five innings of action in game two.

The Eagles put up three runs in both the second and the fifth innings before scoring three more between the sixth and the seventh. The Badgers got on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning. Mangum singled and later scored on a double from Allen. Two batters later, Fitch hit her second homer of the day that cleared the left-field wall and the Badgers trailed 8-4.

Snow College made one final push in the bottom of the seventh as Thorkelson and Roberts both doubled to lead off the inning. Mangun singled to score Roberts before Allen doubled home Mangum to cut the deficit to just two. The comeback attempt was thwarted, and the Badgers suffered the loss, 9-7.
The Badgers came flying out of the gates in game three of the series as they scored 13 runs through the first three innings of action. After surrendering a run in the first inning, the Badgers loaded the bases with no outs before a walked by Allen tied the game at 1. Boydston pushed across the second run of the inning on an infield single and Snow College led 2-1.

The second inning started off similarly as each of the first three batters reached, including an RBI single from Mangum. A wild pitch plated another run before consecutive walks loaded the bases. It was Boydston who delivered a two-RBI single to give the Badgers a 6-1 lead. Maughan capped off the scoring with a single of her own, which scored Fitch.

The Eagles plated three runs in the top of the third, but the Badgers responded with six runs in the bottom of the inning. Mangum singled and advanced to third after an error by the left fielder. She later scored on a wild pitch.

Three of the next four batters reached to load the bases. Three straight singles from Maughan, Madison Salisbury, and Taimane Laolagi-Aloy scored four runs. Roberts drove home the sixth run of the inning and the Badgers led 13-4. The Badgers added a lone tally in the fourth and would go on to win, 14-6 in five innings.

Game four saw the Badgers offense continue where it left off. O'Neal plated Roberts, who had singled, and Snow College led 1-0 three batters in. The second inning started off with a bang as Salisbury tripled before Thorkelson homered down the left-field line.

Mangum and Allen both reached before Fitch, Boydston, and Maughan all drove home runs and the Badgers held a 7-0 lead entering the third inning. The Badgers added two more runs in the fourth on a sacrifice bunt from Boydston and an RBI single from Maughan. Thorkelson sat down the Eagles in order in the fifth and Snow College earned the victory, 9-1.

Fitch led the Badgers offensively from the plate as she went 7-12 (.583/.667/1.250) while hitting two doubles, two homers, and driving in nine RBIs. Mangum went 7-13 (.538/.600/.615) with a double and four RBIs. Boydston and Maughaun combined to go 12-26 (.462/.464/.500) and drove in a combined 16 runs.

Thorkelson paced the Badgers from inside the circle as she pitched 14.1 innings. She struck out five batters and picked up the wins in two of the three games, including two complete games for Snow College.

UP NEXT: Snow College will return home and take on the College of Southern Idaho March 14 and 15 in Ephraim. The Golden Eagles are 9-10 overall and 4-0 within conference play to start the season. They are coming off a four-game sweep against NIC and will take on No. 6 Salt Lake Community College this weekend. For video streaming and live stat information, visit snowbadgers.com.
