The Snow College women's basketball team won two games this past week, one over Western Wyoming Community College and then beating No. 20 nationally ranked Salt Lake Community College.
On Dec. 12 the Lady Badgers hosted Western Wyoming, beating their guest 71-61.
Sophomore guard #Becca Rees# led the team with 17 points and three rebounds. Nine of those points came from behind the 3-point arc. She shot 78 percent in the game.
Sophomore forward #Jordi Wilden# also had a good night scoring 15 points and grabbing seven of the Badgers' 36 rebounds.
Freshmen guard #Amber Daly# stepped up that night with 12 points (two from behind the arc), five rebounds and perfect 2-2 from the free-throw line.
“Wednesday was our best team effort since the beginning of November,” says head coach Natalie Visger. “We executed our game plan defensively and were able to handle their pressure and keep our turnovers to a manageable number.”
The Lady Badgers built a big lead by halftime, 38-21, and held on for the 10-point win as the Mustangs came back in the second half.
“Western started slow, and going into the second half I knew that they would make a run at us,” said Visger.” I thought we kept our composure and made big plays on both ends to secure the win. I have also been very impressed with our work on the boards.”
Snow College was also able to capitalize on Western Wyoming miscues, scoring 27 points on turnovers.
On Saturday the Lady Badgers traveled to Salt Lake City to play the No. 20 nationally ranked Salt Lake Community College Lady Bruins, beating them in overtime, 67-64.
Rees led the Badgers with 18 points and five rebounds. “Our team played together more than ever last night,” said Rees. “We had moments when we could have given up and stopped hustling, but we came together and made an amazing comeback. It was just a fun game all together and a great way to start off conference play.”
After the first half the Badgers went into the locker room trailing 34-26, but were able to come out strong and outscore the Bruins in the second half, 33-25, to tie the game at 59 and send it into overtime.
Sophomore guard, #Courtnie Duncan# put up 11 points, nine of which came from behind the 3-point line, and grabbed four rebounds.
Freshmen guard #Kiz Farrer# was scored 10 for the Badgers and pulled down six rebounds. “All of us girls came to play, bench and all,” said Farrer. “Just like our logo states, 'We Make It Happen.'”
Wilden was also happy with the game by saying, “Overall the game was really good and I was happy with how we played. Our team pulled together as a unit and beat a very good Salt Lake team.”
“Salt Lake battled hard and made a deep, contested three at the buzzer to force overtime,”
said Visger. “We could have folded, but instead I felt we took control right from the tip in extra time and never looked back. It was a great win to have before the holiday break.”
Next The Lady Badgers will be on the road and travel to Tucson, Ariz., to play in the Bruce Fleck Classic Tournament on December 27.
