Lady Badgers lose pair at home

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
EPHRAIM – The Snow College Lady Badgers got off to slow starts in both of the weekend's games and could not maintain their unbeaten conference record, falling to both College of Southern Idaho (CSI) and North Idaho College (NIC) at home. CSI, ranked 25th in the nation, downed the 12th ranked Badgers 61-52 on Thursday and NIC beat the Badgers 76-74 in overtime on Saturday.

On Thursday, CSI was just 15 for 42 (36 percent) from the floor in the first half, but they were able to get off 16 more shots than the Badgers who were 10 for 26 (38 percent), and the Eagles built a nine-point, 36-27, lead at the break. The Eagles pulled down 25 rebounds in the period, including 13 on the offensive end, while giving up only two offensive boards to the Badgers who totaled just 16 rebounds before halftime.

CSI's Holly Blades, who would finish the game with 26 points, had 17 in the first half including three 3-pointers, two of which came from a good eight feet beyond the 3-point line. Samantha Lubcke was a workhorse for CSI in the paint, pulling down 11 rebounds and scoring nine points, and was a big reason the Badgers finished with only seven offensive rebounds in the game while the Eagles had 17. CSI tallied 16 second chance points to only five for Snow. Madison Smith came off the bench to lead Snow with 11 points while Ashton Henderson scored 10 and Whitney Saunders had a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Badgers again dug themselves a huge hole Saturday when they hosted the North Idaho Cardinals, trailing by as many as 18 points in the first 10 minutes of the game before tightening things up slightly to trail 39-25 at halftime. The Cardinals shot 47 percent from the floor before the break, including five for seven from 3-point range, while the Badgers could manage only 23 percent (seven for 31) in the period.

Snow still trailed by 16 (55-39) with nine minutes left in the game, when the Badger defense tightened up and held the Cardinals to only one field goal and five free throws over the next eight minutes. Snow's Jilian Powell drained a 3-pointer with 30 seconds remaining to tie the score at 64 and send the game into overtime. Abby Barnard hit a pair of three's in the overtime for Snow and the Badgers had a shot at the buzzer to tie, but the Cardinals played strong and hit six free throws down the stretch to take the game by a final score of 76-74.

Powell led Snow with 22 points and Kaitlyn Hurley added 20. Saunders had a game-high 14 rebounds and dished out five assists for the Badgers. NIC guard Kara Staggs led all scorers with 32 points including five for 10 from 3-point range and 11 for 13 from the free throw line.
Snow remains at home for two more weeks as they entertain USU-Eastern this Thursday and Colorado Northwestern on Saturday. The Badgers are now 15-3 overall and, at 3-2, are tied with USU-Eastern and CSI for second place in the Scenic West Athletic Conference behind 4-1 Salt Lake Community College.
