Box Score EPHRAIM – The Snow College Lady Badgers bounced back from a pair of tough losses last week with wins over USU-Eastern, 78-61, on Thursday and Colorado Northwestern (CNCC), 76-39, on Saturday. The Badgers are now 17-3 overall and 5-2 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference, one game behind 6-1 Salt Lake Community College. "It was nice to get the two wins this week," said Now head coach Natalie Visger. "We're getting back on track and playing how we need to be for the rest of the season."
Snow started off slowly on Thursday, trailing 10-2 just three minutes into the game. The Badgers clawed their way back through most of the first half, finally pulling even at 19 with 7:45 left before halftime on a lay in by Matty Evensen, and pulling ahead 34-30 at the break.
Badger sophomore
Whitney Saunders had a big second half, scoring 11 of her game-high 17 points and pulling down nine of her game-high 11 rebounds, as Snow outscored the Eagles 44-31 to blow the game open. Jillian Powell finished with 11 points for the Badgers while
Kaitlyn Hurley added nine and Evensen and Savannah Park each scored eight. Evensen and Hurley each finished with nine rebounds. Bryanna Adams led USU-Eastern with 16 points. Â
The Badgers never trailed on Saturday as they ran away from the Spartans of CNCC, 76-39. As a team the Badgers shot 40 percent (27 for 67) from the field, and even better, 44 percent (eight for 18) from 3-point range. Hurley led all scorers with 15 points and three of her teammates, Powell, Park and Abby Barnard, each scored 11. CNCC was 13 for 49 (26 percent) from the floor.Â
Park came off the bench to ignite Badger rallies twice in the first half when the Spartans made runs to get back into the game. Snow led early, 7-2, but CNCC came back to tie the score at seven at the 12-minute mark. But Park nailed a three from the left corner, then stole the ball as CNCC came up court and threaded a pass through defenders for a layup by Barnard, and Snow was ahead 12-7.
Snow led 23-16 with seven minutes left in the first half when CNCC went on a 6-0 run to get to within one. Then over the next two minutes Park nailed a three, grabbed two rebounds, stole the ball, drained a pair of free throws, got an assist on another layup by Barnard, and suddenly Snow led 35-22 and the Spartans never got closer than 13 again.
Snow finished with 46 rebounds to 35 for CNCC, and committed only 16 turnovers while the Spartans had 28. Saunders led all rebounders with 12 and Matty Evensen grabbed eight boards for the Badgers. Jaylen Cox led CNCC in scoring with 14 points and Adriana Trost pulled down eight rebounds.Â
Last week, losses to Southern Idaho and North Idaho dropped Snow out of first place in the SWAC. The Badgers next play on Saturday when they host league-leading Salt Lake with tipoff scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Snow won the first meeting in Salt Lake between the teams, 75-67, on Dec. 18, but the Bruins have beaten every other team in the SWAC since then. Snow can tie the 12th ranked Bruins for first place in the SWAC with a win. "We're excited for a tough game on Saturday," Visger said.
