Lady Badgers fall short in attempt at league lead

Box Score
EPHRAIM – The Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) Bruins used a strong game in the lane to beat back the Snow College Badgers, 78-59, and extend their hold on first place in the Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) over Snow and Southern Idaho. The Bruins scored 46 of their 78 points in the paint, while holding Snow to only 16 points in the paint.

The Badgers struggled to find ways to score all night. They turned the ball over on a shot clock violation on their first possession of the game after winning the opening tip. They had four more turnovers before scoring their first field goal more than five minutes into the game.

Snow rallied late in the first half to take a 29-25 lead into the locker room, secured by a 3-point shot by Jilian Powell in the last minute before the break. Things stayed close through the first eight minutes of the second half, until SLCC, leading by one point at 43-42, went on a 35-17 run to close out the game. The Bruin run was fueled by eight layups, and only three jump shots, along with 13 free throws.

The Bruins finished 30 for 54 (56 percent) from the floor in the game while Snow was 19 for 51 (37 percent). The Bruins recorded 19 assists while the Badgers could manage only six as a team. And SLCC scored 12 points off fast breaks while the Badgers had none.

Snow's Kaitlyn Hurley, who was six for seven from the field, scored 16 points and Whitney Saunders added 15 points while pulling down 11 rebounds. Clarissa Sabedra scored 23 points for SLCC and teammate Tanesha Daniels was a force under the basket scoring 21 points on seven for eight shooting on field goals, all from in the paint, and going a perfect seven for seven from the free throw line. Daniels added 10 rebounds to match Snow's Saunders with a double-double.

Snow could have tied SLCC for the SWAC lead with a win, but the Bruins, 7-1, now hold a two-game lead over both Snow and Southern Idaho at 5-3. Snow hits the road after five straight games at home, playing North Idaho in Coeur d'Alene on Thursday and Southern Idaho in Twin Falls on Saturday while SLCC will make the same trip in the reverse order.
